Female college student dies after friend hits her on head

Chennai: A female college student in Karur, Tamil Nadu, died after she was allegedly beaten grievously in her classroom by a male student, said police. "The boy came into the college and took a log lying inside the compound and entered her classroom and had a small argument. Then he hit the girl on her head twice," a police official in Karur told IANS over phone. The boy has been arrested. Sonali, a third year engineering student, belonged to Madurai, while the boy Udayakumar is from Paramakudi in Trichy district. According to police, the boy and the girl seemed to have been friendly for sometime. "For the past couple of days the girl started avoiding Udayakumar as he was suspended from the college. Angered by this Udayakumar hit her in the classroom," the police official said. Sonali was shifted to a hospital in Madurai for treatment but succumbed to her injuries. "We don't know for sure why and how she was attacked while sitting in her class room. We were told that a suspended student entered her class room and hit her with a log this morning," a relative told news channels in Madurai. The police have arrested Udayakumar, who also attacked a professor trying to rescue Sonali.
