Delhi: Private Cab Drivers Ferrying Schoolchildren On Strike, Demand Commercial Status

Worried cab drivers have requested the Delhi government to support them as they have already faced hardships during the pandemic.

New Delhi: Private cab drivers ferrying schoolchildren in Delhi have gone on a strike on Monday demanding the status of commercial vehicles for their cabs. The demand from the private cab drivers comes amidst the need for job security and hardships faced during the covid pandemic. The sphere under which these cabs operate is not fully regulated but is in a private understanding between parents and the school.

“We're perturbed & request Delhi govt to support us, we don't flout any rules. We've already faced hardships in a pandemic,” a cab driver told news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, the transport department of the Delhi government last week invited an expression of interest from cab aggregators to bear 50 per cent of the cost of training women as commercial drivers, officials said on Wednesday.

To provide employment opportunities to women in the public transportation sector, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government announced on July 18 that it will bear 50 per cent of the cost to train them as commercial drivers.

The expenditure incurred on training women drivers will be shared between the transport department and fleet owners or aggregators on a 50:50 basis.

The women candidates can fill out the forms on the transport department's website by August 15.

The government will provide financial support to the women willing to undergo training to become professional taxi drivers and 50 per cent of the cost to train each of them -- around Rs 4,800 -- would be borne by the transport department.
