Delhi Police Reject Permission For Munawar Faruqui's Show Over Concerns About 'Communal Harmony'

Delhi police's Licensing unit rejected permission for comedian Munawar Faruqui's show after the central district police wrote a report stating that "the show will affect communal harmony in the area."

New Delhi: The Delhi Police have denied permission to stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui for his show scheduled for August 28 in the national capital.

The licensing unit denied the permission after the local central district police sent a report stating that "the show will affect communal harmony in the area.", news agency ANI reported.

Previously, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had written to the Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora on August 25 demanding for Faruqui's show to be cancelled.

As per ANI, the VHP in its letter alleged that "Communal tension arose in Bhagyanagar because of Munawar's jokes on Hindu Gods."

It declared that members of the VHP and Bajrang Dal would hold protests if the show is not cancelled. 

Last Saturday, Munawar Faruqui hosted a standup comedy show in Hyderabad amidst tight security. Nearly 50 people reached the premises and all of them were taken into preventive custody, news agency PTI reported the police a.s saying

The Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar had called for boycotting the show alleging that Faruqui mocked Hindu Gods.

Earlier, Faruqui's show in Bengaluru was cancelled by the city police for the second time as they said that organisers had not taken prior permission to hold the event.

On January 1 this year, Faruqui and four others were arrested by Madhya Pradesh police after a complaint by Eklavya Singh Gaud, son of BJP MLA Malini Laxman Singh Gaud who alleged that objectionable remarks were made about Hindu deities as well as Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a comedy show at a cafe in Indore on New Year's Day.

Munawar was later released on bail.
