Delhi: PM Modi inaugurates police memorial; gets emotional while recalling sacrifices of martyred policemen

October 21 is observed as the 'Police Commemoration Day' in memory of the ten policemen killed at Hot Spring area of Ladakh by Chinese troops in 1959.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated National Police Memorial in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri dedicated to the sacrifices of the police of the country, to mark the National Police Day. October 21 is observed as the 'Police Commemoration Day' in memory of the ten policemen killed at Hot Spring area of Ladakh by Chinese troops in 1959. On the occasion the Prime Minister tweeted “A grateful nation pays tributes to all those policemen and policewomen martyred in the line of duty. We salute their families for their fortitude”. He dedicated national police memorial and museum to the nation. Senior BJP leader LK Advani and Rajnath Singh were also present at the event. The Prime Minister who got emotional in between the speech while  recalling the sacrifices made by the martyred policemen, said: “It is the result of your alertness that the elements which create unrest are unsuccessful in their attempts. The attempts to create fear and insecurity in the nation were foiled by you. The peace prevalent in the nation is possible only due to your services.” He said many people don’t even know who are these men who save lives and take charge of the relief work whenever a building collapse, a boat capsizes, or in case of fire or train accidents. Attacking Congress he said, this memorial which is dedicated to the contribution to the policemen should have been built earlier but unfortunately even after 70 years the previous government took no step towards it. Watch here: He further said: “It is the day to remember every jawan who maintains law and peace in Jammu and Kashmir and fights against terrorism. Jawans on duty in naxal-affected areas are doing a great service. It's also due to them that the number of naxal affected districts is going down and youth are coming to mainstream.” The Wall of Valour at the memorial has the names of all 34,844 policemen who have been martyred since independence . Between September 2017 and October this year, a total of 414 personnel have died in the line of duty.
