Covid Surge: Indian Railways To Fine Rs 500 For Not Wearing Mask Within Premises, Inside Trains

The Railways added that it may take action with immediate effect for a period of six months till further instructions issued in this regard.

New Delhi: On the backdrop of exponential surge in daily Covid-19 cases, the Ministry of Railways issued a circular on Saturday stating a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed on anyone not wearing a face mask/cover within the railway premises and inside trains.

Taking various measures to contain the spread of the resurgence of Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Railways said controlling spitting and act of similar nature due to any person not wearing mask and entering Railways premises, including trains, is important to avoid creation of unclean and unhygienic conditions, which may cause danger to life/public health.

The Railways added that it may take action with immediate effect for a period of six months till further instructions issued in this regard.

“Indian Railways is taking various measures to contain the spread of the resurgence of Covid-19 pandemic. One of the specific guideline is to wear face masks/covers. Fine upto Rs 500 shall be imposed on persons for not wearing a face mask/cover in Rly. Premises (including trains),” the Ministry of Railways tweeted along with the circular.

The other Covid-19 guidelines include maintaining social distancing, temperature screening at the stations’ entry and exit besides encouraging the passengers to constantly sanitise their hands.

The Railways had issued a Standard Operating Procedure for the movement of trains earlier on May 11 advising all passengers that “they shall be wearing face cover/mask at entry and during travel”.
