Coronavirus Update: India Registers Over 1.45 Lakh Cases And 4,167 Deaths, Recovery Rate at 41.6%

India on Tuesday reported a spike of 6,535 new COVID-19 cases and 146 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the country now at 1,45,380 including 80,722 active cases, 60,490 cured/discharged, and 4167 deaths.

New Delhi:  While India stands at 10th position in the number of total coronavirus infected cases, the nation has recorded 6535 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally of cases to 1,45,380. According to the Union Health Ministry, the total number of active cases in the country stands at 80,722, while 60,490 have been cured. 4,167 have lost their lives to the pandemic. The worst affected state Maharashtra has recorded 2436 new cases and 60 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of infected cases in the state is 52,667. Mumbai, itself has recorded 1430 new cases taking the toll of the financial capital to 31,972, which is 60% of the total infected cases in Maharashtra. Tamil Nadu stands at the second place and has surged to 17,082 cases, while Gujarat has recorded 14,460 cases. The national capital, Delhi, is also witnessing a continuous spike in the number of cases and the total number has reached 14,053 in the state. After the highest spike in the number of coronavirus cases yesterday, the recovery rate of the country is at 41.6%, while the mortality rate is at 2.9%. American Professor and Researcher Bhramar Mukherjee has claimed that by July, the number of Coronavirus cases will rise beyond 5 lakh in India. She has made this statement based on her study of the last five days, from May 20 to May 25. She also said the number would cross 21 lakhs and this would pose a huge trouble for the Indian authorities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also warned there can be an “immediate second peak” of the disease, if the measures are withdrawn ‘too soon’. WHO emergencies director Dr. Mike Ryan has noted that even though cases of COVID-19 are on the decline in some parts of the world, the infection has surged in Central and South America, South Asia, and Africa. While the world is already in the middle of the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic, Ryan said that the governments shall remain “cognizant” that the fatal disease can spike “any time”. The global number of coronavirus cases has crossed 5.5 million and the US remains the worst affected nation due to the pandemic.
