Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, Sunday, June 6, 2021: Haryana’s state government announced today that a company in Malta has showed interest in directly supplying up to 60 million doses of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V to the state. The centre on Saturday defended its liberalised vaccine policy and said the media reports suggesting inequities in distribution of doses were "inaccurate and speculative in nature".

24.60 crore vaccine doses provided to states/UTs: Centre

Amid reports of vaccine shortage in some states, the Centre on Sunday said that 24.60 crore Covid vaccine doses have been provided to states/UTs till date. It said that it has so far provided, both through the free of cost category and through direct state procurement category, more than 24 crore vaccine doses (24,60,80,900) to states/UTs, and of this, total consumption, including wastages, is 22,96,95,199 doses, as per data available at 8 a.m. on Sunday. More than 1.63 crore vaccine doses (1,63,85,701) are still available with the states/UTs to be administered, it added.


Gujarat to set up over 75 oxygen plants in view of possible third wave

The Gujarat government has initiated the process to set up more than 75 oxygen plants to produce additional 300 MT of the life-saving gas if the demand for it goes up during the possible third wave of COVID-19, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said on Sunday. At present, 800 to 900 MT of medical oxygen is available at any time in the state

UP adds 1,165 COVID-19 cases, 101 deaths

Uttar Pradesh's COVID-19 caseload surged to 16,98,389 on Sunday with 1,165 fresh infections while the death toll climbed to 21,252 as 101 more people succumbed to the viral disease.

Of the fresh cases, 102 were reported from Kanpur, 91 from Gautam Buddh Nagar, 55 from Meerut and 51 from Varanasi. Thirty-six districts reported fresh infections in single digits. 

As many as 2,446 COVID-19 patients recovered from the disease and were discharged in a day. With this, the total number of discharged patients has increased to 16,59,209. There are 17,928 active cases in the state, according to the statement. The recovery rate stands at 97.7 per cent.

Recoveries Outnumber Daily COVID-19 Cases In Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh reported 8,976 fresh cases of coronavirus, 13,568 recoveries and 90 deaths in 24 hours ending 9 am on Sunday.

Chittoor district crossed the two-lakh total cases mark, the second behind East Godavari in the state.

The latest bulletin said the total positive cases in the state rose to 17.58 lakh, recoveries to 16,23,447 and toll 11,466 so far. The number of active cases declined further to 1,23,426, it said.

In 24 hours East Godavari added 1,669, Chittoor 1,232 and Anantapuramu 995 fresh infections. Chittoors total Covid-19 case count now stood at 2,00,368, second to East Godavaris 2,38,702. Chittoor, however, has the highest toll of 1,376 in the state. Its active caseload is now 16,979 after 1,82,013 recoveries.

Phase II clinical trial of Niclosamide drug for treatment of COVID-19 patients begins

The CSIR and Laxai Life Sciences Private Limited have initiated phase II clinical trials of anti-helminitic drug Niclosamide' for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, a statement said on Sunday.

The trial is a multi-centric, randomised, open label clinical study to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of Niclosamide for treating hospitalised COVID-19 patients.

Niclosamide has been extensively used in the past for treating tapeworm infection in adults as well as children. The safety profile of this drug has been tested over time and has been found safe for human consumption at different dose levels, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) said.

17 new COVID-19 cases push Andamans tally to 7,105

 Andaman and Nicobar Islands COVID-19 tally rose to 7,105 as 17 more people tested positive for the virus, while one new fatality pushed the death toll in the union territory to 122, a health official said on Sunday.

Of the 17 new cases, 16 were detected during contact tracing while one was airport arrival, he said.

All passengers arriving by flight have to go undergo a mandatory Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) before they are allowed entry into the islands, the official said.

Twenty-four more people have been cured of the disease, taking the total number of recoveries in the archipelago to 6,876, the official said.

The union territory now has 107 active COVID-19 cases of which 98 are in South Andaman district and nine in North and Middle Andaman district, he said, adding that the Nicobar district of the archipelago is now coronavirus free as it has no active cases.

Thane district sees 621 new COVID-19 cases, 37 fatalities

 With the addition of 621 fresh coronavirus positive cases, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra went up to 5,21,000, an official said on Sunday.

These new cases were reported on Saturday.

With the death of 37 more COVID-19 patients, the toll in the Thane district rose to 9,445, he said, adding the mortality rate is 1.81 per cent.

The details of recovered and under-treatment patients were not provided by the district administration.

In neighbouring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,11,713 while the death toll is 2,164, he added.

Brazil Gives Nod To Import Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, Russia's Sputnik V

Brazil has given clearance to the proposal to import Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin into the South American country with some conditions, news agency PTI reported today.


The National Health Surveillance Agency of Brazil- Anvisa - had earlier denied permission to import Covaxin after authorities found that the Indian plant in which the jab was being made did not meet the good manufacturing practice (GMP) requirements.


The Brazilian health regulator also approved another proposal to import Russia's Sputnik V vaccine into that country.


According to Anvisa's approval, Brazil is expected to receive four million doses of Covaxin initially.

Assam reports 3,781 new COVID-19 cases, 44 fresh fatalities

Assam's COVID-19 tally rose to 4,32,714 on Saturday as 3,781 more people tested positive for the infection, while 44 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 3,621, a health bulletin said.

Cachar district reported the highest number of new cases at 322, followed by 276 in Kamrup Metro and 273 in Dibrugarh.

Nagaon reported the highest number of fresh fatalities at six, followed by five in Kamrup Metro and four in Dibrugarh, it said.

A total of 1,347 COVID-19 patients have died due to other causes to date.

The state now has 51,403 active cases, while 3,76,343 people have been cured of the disease thus far, including 3,099 in the last 24 hours. The recovery rate among the coronavirus patients in the state stands at 86.97 per cent.

Delhi govt hospital bars nurses from talking in Malayalam at work, union fumes

 A Delhi government hospital Saturday issued a circular asking its nursing staff not to use Malayalam at work as "maximum patients and colleagues do not know this language" which it said causes a lot of inconvenience.

The circular issued by the Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER), one of the leading facilities here, has asked its nurses to use only Hindi and English for communication or face "strict action".

G B Pant nurses' association president Liladhar Ramchandani claimed it was issued in pursuance of a complaint sent by a patient to a senior officer in the health department, regarding use of Malayalam language at the hospital, while adding that "the union disagrees with the wordings used in the circular".

The circular says, "A complaint has been received regarding Malayalam language being used for communication in working places in GIPMER. Whereas maximum patient and colleagues do not know this language and feel helpless causing a lot of inconvenience".

Malta Firm Answers Haryana Govt's Global Covid Vaccine Bid

Haryana’s state government announced today that a company in Malta has showed interest in directly supplying up to 60 million doses of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V to the state. Haryana is the first state in the country to receive a positive response from a foreign company for direct vaccination supply. 


Pharma Regulatory Services Ltd, based in the European country, has submitted a “expression of interest" but has not yet submitted a bid for a contract, according to a statement from the state government.


The vaccine was offered for sale at a price of  Rs. 1,120 per dose by the foreign firm.

Johnson will host the first in-person summit in almost two years of G7 leaders – which follows a meeting of the group’s finance ministers which wrapped up earlier in the day – and said he would seek a pledge to hit the global vaccination goal.


The inclusion of yoga guru Ramdev-promoted Patanjali Ayurved's Coronil in the Uttarakhand government's COVID-19 kit amounts to "mixopathy", the Uttarakhad unit of the Indian Medical Association said today, raising strong objection to the proposal.


Pointing out that Coronil has not been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and that the ayurvedic medicine is not included in the central government's guidelines, the doctors' body said, "The addition of Coronil with allopathic drugs shall also amount to mixopathy (cocktail of ayurveda and allopathy), which is not permitted as per the rulings of the Supreme Court, and using it would be contempt."
