Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, August 11, Wednesday: A six-member central team that visited eight districts of Kerala has said from August 1 to August 20, the state may witness around 4.6 lakh COVID-19 cases.
The unlocking of activities, approaching of the Onam festival (August 20), and reopening of tourism pose challenging scenarios and it is a cause of concern, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Director Dr Sujeet Singh, who headed the central team, said at a press conference here on Tuesday.
Kerala accounted for more than half of the COVID-19 cases recorded in the country in the last seven days, the Centre said on Tuesday. Singh said the southern state has recorded a high number of reinfections even after two doses of the vaccine being administered and the issue is being probed.
Kerala on Tuesday reported 21,119 fresh COVID cases pushing the total infection caseload to 35,86,693, with the test positivity rate in the state rising close to 16 per cent. The number of people who succumbed to the virus rose to 18,004 with 152 more deaths.
Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 5,609 coronavirus positive cases and 137 fatalities, including the highest 46 in the Pune region, while 7,568 patients recovered, a state health department official said.
With the new additions, the tally of infections and the death toll in Maharashtra rose to 63,63,442 and 1,34,201, respectively, the official said.

Punjab records jump in Covid cases
Punjab on Wednesday registered a jump in COVID-19 infections, 107 cases surfacing in the state in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 5,99,678. With no Covid-related death reported on Wednesday, the toll stood at 16,325, according to the health bulletin. The toll, however, included three deaths, which were not reported earlier.
The state saw 54, 31 and 74 infections on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday respectively. It registered 118 cases on July 17 and since then, the state has been witnessing less than 100 infections daily.
With the rise in the number of infections, the active cases rose to 517 from 460 Tuesday. With 45 recoveries from the infection, the number of cured persons reached 5,82,836 Wednesday, as per the bulletin.
With no death reported on Wednesday, the toll figure stood at 811. The number of active cases in the city was 35 while the number of cured persons was 61,151.

Maha Govt Allows Hotels, Restaurants To Run Till 10 PM With 50% Capacity
Maharashtra Government allows the operations of hotels and restaurants till 10 pm in the state. Maha health minister Rajesh Tope said that Restaurants/eateries allowed to conduct business till 10 pm from August 15 with with 50 percent capacity. As of now hotels and restaurants were allowed to operate till 4 pm only.
For malls double dose certificate is compulsory. Marriage halls, offices, shops will also get complete relaxation.
The minisyer further said that, "moment the need for oxygen per day comes to 700 metric tonnes in the state, then there will be a full lockdown imposed in the third wave. As other states also may need oxygen so it is not clear if we can get from center when we need."
