Arunachal Pradesh Logs 367 New Cases, 2 Deaths

Puducherry Adds 104 New Cases; Test Positivity Rate Below 2%

 Puducherry reported 104 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, a senior official of the Health and Family Welfare Services department said. The test positivity ratewas less than two per cent in the union territory, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services S Mohan Kumar said. The 104 new cases saw the overall tally rise to 1,19,509. He said 6,119 samples were tested during the last 24 hours ending 10 AM Friday and the test positivity rate was 1.69 per cent.

Uttarakhand To Issue SOPs As Neighbouring States Refuse To Cancel Kanwar Yatra

With neighbouring Uttar Pradesh among others saying it will not stop, a cautious Uttarakhand is drafting a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to handle pilgrims who might enter the state despite the government suspending the procession within its boundaries.


DGP Ashok Kumar, who held a meeting with police officers on the issue Thursday, said forces will be deployed on Uttarakhand borders, for which assessment of the number of police personnel required had been done, and kanwar enforcement teams constituted in every district. The yatra begins around the last week of July.

Mask mandate returns to Los Angeles as coronavirus cases rise

Los Angeles County will reimpose its mask mandate this weekend in the latest sign that public health officials are struggling with an alarming rise in coronavirus cases tied to the highly contagious Delta variant.


The county, home to 10 million people and the nation's second-largest city, Los Angeles, is one of several jurisdictions to recommend or mandate wearing masks or other pandemic restrictions in recent days as cases rise to worrisome levels in many parts of the United States.


"We’re requiring masking for everyone while indoors at public settings & businesses, regardless of vaccination status so that we can stop the increased level of transmission we're seeing," the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said on Twitter Thursday.

India is likely to be hit by the third wave of Coronavirus at the end of August, although the intensity will be a little lesser than the second wave, Dr Samiran Panda, Head of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases at the Indian Council of Medical Research, said. An NDTV report quoted Dr Panda as saying, “There would be a nationwide third wave but that does not mean that it would be as high or as intense as the second wave."


Dr Panda pointed out four factors that could lead to the third wave. The first is the drop in immunity acquired from the first and second wave. “If that goes down, it could lead to a third wave," he said.

Covid deaths cross 36,000-mark in Karnataka

Even as the pandemic's second wave has been waning over the days, Covid deaths crossed 36,000-mark in Karnataka, with 48 deaths in the last 24 hours, said the state health bulletin on Thursday.

"With 48 patients, including 10 in Bengaluru, 7 in Dakshina Kannada and 5 in Mysuru succumbing to the infection during the day, the state's death rose to 36,037 and the city's toll to 15,771 since the pandemic broke out in mid-March a year ago," said the bulletin.

The latest data on Covid-19 tracker of the Union Health Ministry also shows that the southern state ranks second in the number of deaths after Maharashtra, which lost a whopping 1,26,390 lives since March 2020.

Meanwhile, 1,977 new cases were registered on Wednesday, taking the state's Covid tally to 28,78,564, including 32,383 active cases, while recoveries rose to 28,10,121, with 3,188 patients discharged during the day.

Andhra logs 2,000 more Covid cases, 24 deaths

Andhra Pradesh on Thursday registered 2,526 new Covid cases, raising the state's overall tally over 19.3 lakh, even as its active caseload dropped to 25,526.

As many as 2,526 more persons recovered from the disease in the past 24 hours, raising the state's total number of recoveries over 18.9 lakh.

East Godavari district reported the highest number of cases at 404, followed by Chittoor (391), Prakasam (308), Krishna (269), West Godavari (235), Nellore (210), Guntur (178), Kadapa (157), Visakhapatnam (119), Srikakulam (91), Anantapur (80), Vizianagaram (49) and Kurnool (35).

Except for Vizianagaram, all the other districts of Andhra Pradesh have now reported more than 1 lakh Covid cases, though Vizianagaram is also drawing closer towards that mark, just short of 19,000 cases.

East Godavari tops the chart with more than 2.7 lakh cases, followed by Chittoor with 2.2 lakh cases.
