Congress President Sonia Gandhi Tests Covid-19 Positive, PM Modi Wishes Speedy Recovery

“She has developed mild fever and some symptoms and has isolated herself and has been given requisite medical attention," ANI quoted Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala as saying.

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been asked to appear before the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the National Herald case on June 8. Her lawyer may request the investigating agency to allow Gandhi to appear on a later date or virtually, sources said. This comes as the Congress president has tested positive for Covid-19.

“She has developed mild fever and some symptoms and has isolated herself and has been given requisite medical attention," ANI quoted Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala as saying.

"As of today, her date of appearance before the ED on June 8th stands as it is,” Surjewala added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and wished the Congress president a speedy recovery.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Enforcement Directorate summoned the Congress president and her parliamentarian son Rahul Gandhi in connection with the alleged National Herald money laundering case.

Rahul has been asked to join the investigation on June 2. He has, however, sought a date after June 5 since he is presently not in India, sources in the Congress said.

The case was registered recently to probe alleged financial irregularities in the party-promoted Young Indian that owns the National Herald newspaper.

The Enforcement Directorate has been probing Associate Journals Ltd (AJL), the holding company of the National Herald newspaper, and the role of various Congress leaders under the anti-money laundering law since 2016 after taking cognisance of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Congress veteran Pawan Kumar Bansal were quizzed by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with this case earlier this year.
