Condolences On Queen's Demise, Discussion On India-UK Bilateral Ties: PM Modi Speaks To Liz Truss

Prime Minister Modi, on behalf of the people of India, further expressed his condolences to the Royal family and the people of UK on the demise of Queen Elizabeth II.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his British counterpart Liz Truss over phone on Saturday to congratulate the latter on assuming her new office and also appreciated her contributions to boosting the India-UK bilateral ties in previous roles as Trade Secretary and Foreign Secretary.     

According to reports, the leaders committed to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UK, and discussed various issues of bilateral interest, that include the progress in the implementation of the Roadmap 2030, ongoing FTA negotiations, defence and security cooperation, and the people-to-people ties between both the nations.

Prime Minister Modi, on behalf of the people of India, further expressed his condolences to the Royal family and the people of UK on the demise of Queen Elizabeth II.

Few days back, PM Modi had congratulated PM Truss for being elected as the third woman Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Taking to Twitter, Modi wrote, “Congratulations @trussliz for being chosen to be the next PM of the UK. Confident that under your leadership, the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will be further strengthened. Wish you the very best for your new role and responsibilities.”

Meanwhile, the Indian government has declared one-day state mourning on Sunday as a mark of respect to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday.

“On the day of mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half mast throughout India on all buildings where the National Flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day,” a press release from the Union home ministry said.

Expressing grief over the Queen’s death, PM Modi described her as a “stalwart of our times” and said that she provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people.
