Centre Wants To Have 'Peaceful And Prosperous' Northeast: Amit Shah During Meeting With Naga Leaders

New Delhi: Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday met several political leaders of Naga groups over the peace accord, and clarified that the Modi government wants to have a peaceful and prosperous Northeast. “All the efforts of the central government are aimed at resolving complicated issues that came up during the ongoing talks with Naga groups like NSCN-IM in a way that there is all-round satisfaction at the conclusion of the parleys,” according to a home ministry spokesperson, news agency PTI reported. However, the spokesperson cautioned against any kind of speculation about the negotiations.

The discussions over the Naga issues have been ongoing for many years and it has always been the endeavor of the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to have a peaceful and prosperous Northeast, the spokesperson added.
The home minister held meetings with the Naga groups leaders led by the chief minister of Nagaland Shri Neiphiu Rio in New Delhi where several issues were discussed, the spokesperson tweeted.
What is the status of negotiations?
With the negotiations still ongoing, the spokesperson noted that any report on possible solutions to various issues during the negotiations would only be speculative.
On August 3, 2015, the government signed a framework agreement with the major Naga insurgent group NSCN-IM in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at a permanent solution.
The agreement was finalised after almost 80 rounds of negotiations spanning 18 years, with the first breakthrough made in 1997. It is when the ceasefire agreement was concluded after years of insurgency in Nagaland, that started soon after India's Independence in 1947. The groups which have entered into ceasefire agreements are: NSCN-NK, NSCN-R, NSCN K-Khango and NSCN (K) Niki.
Separately, the government is also holding peace parleys with splinter groups of the NSCN after entering into ceasefire agreements.
However, the current talks with the NSCN-IM are not reaching any conclusion as the group has been insisting on a separate Naga flag and constitution, a demand rejected by the central government.
