BRS Leader K Kavitha Released On Bail From Tihar Jail, Says ‘Will Give Back With Interest To Those Who...’

BRS leader K Kavitha, arrested in March in the Delhi liquor policy scam case, has been released on bail from Tihar Jail. The Supreme Court granted her bail in both corruption and money laundering cases.

BRS leader K Kavitha, who was arrested earlier this year in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, was released from Tihar Jail late Tuesday evening. This follows a Supreme Court ruling granting her bail in both corruption and money laundering cases. Kavitha, who had been in custody since March, was welcomed outside the jail by BRS workers and supporters who celebrated with drums and firecrackers.

Her brother and BRS working president, K T Rama Rao, was also present at the scene and was seen embracing her after she stepped out of prison.

Addressing her supporters, Kavitha expressed her gratitude and shared her personal struggles during her time away.

“I am happy to meet all of you after five and a half months. I have been in politics for 18 years and have seen many ups and downs. However, as a mother, it was very difficult for me personally or for my family to be away from my children for such an extended period. We will give back with interest to those who have caused this situation for our family. The time will come, and we will definitely give back with interest. I am deeply grateful to all those who supported my family and me during this challenging time. I want to thank all of you,” Kavitha said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

She also reflected on her emotional reunion with her family. “I became emotional meeting my son, brother, and husband today after almost five months. Only politics is responsible for this situation. The country knows that I was jailed purely for political reasons, and I did not make any mistake. I will fight. I am a Telangana child. I am KCR's daughter. There is no question of me committing any wrongdoing. I am steadfast and determined. I was unjustly imprisoned.”

Kavitha concluded by asserting her commitment to her political work, “I will continue to work strongly for the people with commitment. We were always resilient. We are fighters. We will fight it out legally and politically. By sending us to jail illegally, they have only made the BRS and KCR’s team stronger and unbreakable.”

Kavitha met party leaders and workers at the BRS office in Delhi's Vasant Vihar where she also exchanged sweets with her son and brother KTR to celebrate her release.

Kavitha (46) had been held in Tihar’s jail number 6 for nearly five months. Her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate occurred on March 15, 2024, from her residence in Hyderabad, while the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested her from Tihar Jail on April 11, 2024.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan noted that Kavitha had been in custody for approximately five months and that the investigations by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) had been completed. The court's decision on Tuesday overturned a previous denial of bail by the Delhi High Court on July 1.

Earlier in the day, Kavitha's brother, K T Rama Rao, thanked the Supreme Court for granting bail and remarked on X, "Thank you Supreme Court. Relieved. Justice prevailed."

Several BRS MLAs and party leaders, who were also in Delhi, congratulated Rama Rao on the Supreme Court's decision. BRS leaders celebrated the bail grant by distributing sweets at the party’s headquarters, news agency PTI reported.
