Twitter Removes 'Blue Tick' From MoS IT Rajiv Chandrasekhar's Account, Restores Later

On the removal of the blue tick from the account of Union Minister Rajiv Chandrasekhar, Twitter said that changing the name of his handle could be the reason behind it.

Twitter Blue Tick: Microblogging site Twitter remains in the news for some reason or the other. Today it was for removing the blue tick (verification badge) from the Twitter account of Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology and Skill Development, Rajiv Chandrasekhar.

However, the official verification badge or generally called Blue Tick was restored later. Twitter explained that changing the name of their handle on the micro-blogging site could be the reason behind the removal of the blue tick.

This is not the first time that a leader's blue tick has been removed on Twitter. Earlier, Twitter had removed the blue tick from the account of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. Later the blue tick is restored on his account as well.

Not only this, a few days ago the blue tick was removed from the Twitter account of many Sangh leaders including RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat but later restored.

Twitter In Controversy

The new IT rules have produced a 'stalemate' situation between the government and the social media platform. While not readily agreeing to comply with the law, Twitter lost its intermediary status. Thus a flurry of FIRs on various subjects against Twitter India and its MD.

Amidst the ongoing tussle with the government over new IT rules, Twitter recently informed that it has appointed Vinay Prakash as its Resident Grievance Officer in India. Not only this, but Twitter also published its first compliance report under the new IT rules.

It is mandatory to issue compliance reports under the new IT rules.

What is in the Twitter report?

In its India Transparency Report: User Complaints and Forward Monitoring, July 2021 report, Twitter said it had received 94 complaints. From May 26, 2021, to June 25, 2021, it has 'action' on 133 URLs. These include complaints from individual users with court orders.

Twitter said that 20 of the complaints received through the Complaints Officer-Indian channel were related to defamation, six to exploitation/abuse, and four to sensitive adult content.

Apart from this, three complaints were related to violation of privacy and one complaint related to the infringement of intellectual property.
