‘Meeting Will Be Non-Political’: Sushil Modi On Parliamentary Panel Meet With Law Commission, Ministry Over UCC

A parliamentary standing committee will meet representatives of the Law Commission and the law ministry on July 3 to discuss the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

A parliamentary standing committee has called representatives of the Law Commission and the law ministry on July 3 on a recent notice issued by the panel seeking views of stakeholders on the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Till Tuesday evening, the law panel had received nearly 8.5 lakh responses on its public notice, news agency PTI reported. BJP MP and head of parliamentary Sushil Modi said the meeting of the committee is non-political and will have a discussion on the Law Commission's report.

As per the schedule of the standing committee on law and personnel, it will hear the views of representatives of the law panel and legal affairs and legislative departments of the law ministry "on public notice issued by the Law Commission of India on June 14, 2023, inviting views from the various stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code, under the subject 'Review of Personal Laws", PTI reported. 

UCC refers to a common set of laws that are applicable to all the citizens of India that is not based on religion and dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption among other personal matters. 

"The committee has people from all parties. Discussions will be held on July 3. If required, a meeting will be held after that. The meeting of the committee is non-political. The committee discusses important issues. This time we will have a discussion on the Law Commission's report. The committee is entirely neutral," Sushil Modi who is the head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Speaking to ANI, he also stressed that in more than a dozen cases, the Supreme Court has said that the UCC should be implemented as soon as possible. "The court has repeated this time and again. I don't understand why the same age for marriage can't be fixed for Hindus and Muslims. It is being propagated that the UCC will affect religious customs and rituals. If criminal law is the same for all people in the country, then why can't civil law be that way?" he remarked.

Earlier in the week, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lamented that efforts are being made by political opponents to give communal colour if the Centre talks about UCC implementation.

He said politics should not be done by dividing society but by taking the society and country together.

"What we are going to do has been written in the Indian Constitution. We are going to fulfil the same promise. Isn't there one country, one legislation?" the senior BJP leader said addressing a rally in Jodhpur, as per PTI.

The remarks came as Opposition parties targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his comments on UCC.

At a gathering of party workers in Bhopal, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of the UCC, citing equal rights for all citizens as prescribed by the Constitution. He also accused the Opposition of using the UCC to mislead and provoke the Muslim community.  "How will the country run with different laws? People are only being instigated in the name of the Uniform Civil Code. Two types of laws cannot run the country. The Constitution of India also talks about equal rights for the citizens," he said.
