Days After Quitting AAP, Ashok Tanwar Joins BJP In Presence Of Haryana CM ML Khattar

Days after quitting the AAP, Ashok Tanwar joined the BJP in the presence of CM Manohar Lal Khattar. He has also previously served as Haryana unit president of the Congress party.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha Polls, former Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar, who recently quit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership saying the country has witnessed great change under 10 years of his governance.

"Under the leadership of PM Modi, the country has changed a lot in the last 10 years. Everyone has seen the way work has been done to improve the lives of people and help the country become number 1, this has impressed everyone, including me," he said in a presser, as per news agency PTI.

Ashok Tanwar went on to thank the BJP leadership for giving him an opportunity to be part of the party "and play an important role in the development of our country". "There's a need to bring more transparency to Indian politics," he remarked, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Tanwar's Train Took Wrong Track And Reached AAP: Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar

As per PTI, Haryana CM Khattar welcomed him into the BJP saying, "Big day of expansion of BJP Haryana as the former Congress state chief and a former leader of AAP-- Ashok Tanwar has joined the BJP with his supporters."

"He is my nephew as his mother and I belong to the same village," Khattar added.

"Tanwar was likely to join the BJP after leaving the Congress but his train took a wrong track and reached AAP", the Haryana chief minister said in a lighter vein, adding that they have often been in touch, reported PTI.

Tanwar ended up tied with the Congress in 2019 and joined AAP in 2022. In between, the former Lok Sabha MP had floated his party and even joined the Trinamool Congress for a brief period.

Tanwar resigned from AAP on Thursday, protesting its likely alliance with the Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The BJP is hopeful that Tanwar's joining will boost its efforts to consolidate its votes in the state where Jats are the most populous caste and are seen to be leaning towards the Congress in most parts.

Assembly polls are also due in Haryana later this year. The BJP has been in power in the state since 2014 with Khattar at the helm throughout the period.
