New Delhi: Hours after violence rocked south Delhi on Sunday, police said the situation was under control and they have detained some of the people who had allegedly indulged in arson and vandalism during a protest against the amended citizenship law. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said four buses and two police vehicles were torched during the protest, adding six policemen were also injured. He also said stones were pelted from inside the varsity at police personnel, forcing them to use teargas to disperse the "violent mob". "The mob caused arson, set motorcycles ablaze, it pelted stones at us," DCP said. "This mob was violent. Around 6 policemen have been injured in the stone-pelting. We are yet to ascertained the identities," Biswal said. Some people have been detained, DCP said, but did not give details. "Our only interest is to push the mob back, so law and order can be restored in the area. We have no problem with university (Jamia Millia Islamia University) students," he added. On being asked did police fire at the protesters, DCP said, "There has been no firing absolutely. It is a false rumour that is being spread." "The campus is not unified, it is located on both sides of the road, and while we were pushing the mob back, they were going in the University & then were throwing stones from inside, so we were checking those places," he told the media. Meanwhile, the police are unwilling to confirm if petrol bombs were used in Sunday's violence. They have also not confirmed if students were involved in Sunday's protest that led to violence.
