Former Supreme Court Judge Abdul Nazeer Takes Oath As Andhra Pradesh Governor

On February 12, India's President Droupadi Murmu appointed Abdul Nazeer as governor.

Former Supreme Court judge Justice S. Abdul Nazeer was sworn in as Governor of Andhra Pradesh on Friday. AP High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra administered the oath of office to Justice Nazeer at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Vijayawada.

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, ministers, TDP chief  N. Chandrababu Naidu, judges, and top officials attended the ceremony. The leaders and representatives greeted the new Governor following the oath of office.

On February 12, India's President Droupadi Murmu appointed Abdul Nazeer as governor.

Justice Abdul Nazeer, who retired on January 4 this year as a judge of the Supreme Court, will be the third governor of Andhra Pradesh. After the bifurcation of the state, E.S.L. Narasimhan served as the AP Governor from June 2, 2014, to July 23, 2019. After that, Biswabhusan Harichandan from Odisha had been appointed as AP Governor, and he was moved to Chhattisgarh Raj Bhavan. Harichandan, a senior BJP leader from Odisha, assumed office as governor in July 2019. 

Judge Nazeer, who was born on January 5, 1958, completed his undergraduate studies at Mahaveera College in Beluvai, Moodabidari Taluk, Karnataka. At Kodiyalbail SDM Law College in Mangalore, he completed his law degree. On February 18, 1983, he registered as an advocate and began practising law in the Karnataka High Court. On May 12, 2003, he was appointed as a Karnataka High Court Additional Judge. On September 24, 2004, he received a promotion to Permanent Judge.

He was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2017. He was on the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court when it delivered the verdict in the Ayodhya case.

Justice Nazeer was also on the full bench that delivered the verdict on the triple talaq. He was one of the two judges who opposed the majority verdict banning triple talaq.
