Delhi government bans retrofitting CNG conversion kits in cars
New Delhi: After the diesel ban, the Transport Department of the Delhi Government has now banned the retrofitting of CNG conversion kits in “in-use” cars, following complaints received on uncertified kits retrofitted by unauthorized dealers.
The uncertified or unapproved kits are hazardous by nature, as CNG is usually a very highly inflammable fuel. The market is currently flooded with such unauthorized dealers proliferating the retrofitting of uncertified and unapproved CNG kits.
In order to stem the proliferation of these kits, the Delhi Government has ordered Motor Licensing Officers (MLOs) to not register vehicles with after-market CNG conversion. So, vehicles with retrofitted CNG conversion kits will no longer be registered by the State Transport Department of the Delhi Government.
The ban may stand valid till a complete inquiry is carried out into the matter. There is also no time frame for the ban to be lifted. However, CNG-fitted cars coming straight from the manufacturer’s facilities will be registered.
The ban also has nothing to do with pollution control but has more to do with ensuring the safety of the people. The Government does not also fancy a blow up of these kits, which would regress them from CNG conversion plans.
So, anybody now desiring CNG models must purchase their CNG vehicles straight from manufacturers. Retrofitted cars will not be registered by the Delhi Government’s Transport Department. The period of the ban will also be indefinite, till the Delhi Government decides to repeal it.
