Delhi Police Ready To Implement New Criminal Laws Which Come Into Effect On July 1
The Delhi Police is ready to enforce three new criminal laws that will take effect nationwide from Monday, significantly reforming India's criminal justice system and replacing colonial-era statutes.
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam are to replace the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
"Extensive training sessions were held to familiarize officers with the new laws. Those who attended the training received handbooks to aid their understanding," said a senior Delhi Police officer, PTI reported.
In January, a 14-member committee was formed to examine the laws and develop study materials for Delhi Police personnel. The committee was headed by Special Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma and included DCP Joy Tirkey, Additional DCP Uma Shankar, and other officers.
New Criminal Laws To Come Into Force On July 1, All Police Stations To Hold Special Event
All 17,500 police stations across the country are scheduled to host a special event on July 1 involving women, youth, students, senior citizens, and notable figures to inform them about the key features of the new criminal laws, official sources said.
The new laws, which include the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023, will come into effect on that day. These will replace the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act respectively.
PTI cited the sources stating that, in conjunction with the introduction of these three criminal laws, the officer-in-charge of each police station in all states and Union Territories will host an event on July 1 to highlight the main aspects of the new legislation.
