Serial Killer Charles Sobhraj's Release From Nepal Jail Delayed By A Day
After a Nepali court ordered Charles Sobhraj released on health grounds on Thursday, the French serial killer whose 1970s Asian killing spree was depicted in the Netflix series The Serpent was still awaiting his release.
Sobhraj, 78, was sentenced to 15 days in prison in the Himalayan republic in 2003 for two murders that took place decades earlier, according to a decision made by the Supreme Court in Kathmandu on Wednesday.
His release was in accordance with the law allowing the compassionate discharge of bedridden prisoners who have served three-quarters of their sentence, according to the verdict. He had open heart surgery in 2017.
His lawyer stated that Sobhraj will not be released from prison until Friday, despite earlier indications that he would return to France.
“He is staying in the Central Jail again today. He will be sent to the immigration department tomorrow,” his lawyer, Gopal Shiwakoti Chintan, told reporters on Thursday.
