Polling For 36 UP Legislative Council Seats To Be Held On Saturday
Following a landslide victory in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the BJP has set its sights on becoming the state Legislative Council's single-largest party by gaining a majority of the 36 Upper House seats up for grabs on Saturday.
These seats are distributed over 35 constituencies of local governments. The biannual poll was originally scheduled for two days, but it will now be held on the same day, April 9. On April 12, the counting will take place.
The saffron party has a chance to gain a majority in both Houses of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature.
Ninety-five candidates are in the fray. Voting will take place from 8 am to 4 pm at 739 polling centres with 1,20,657 voters expected to exercise their franchise, the chief electoral officer of Uttar Pradesh said.
President Kovind To Inaugurate National Judicial Conference In Gujarat On April 9
On April 9, President Ram Nath Kovind will kick off the National Judicial Conference, a two-day event organised by the Gujarat High Court, in Tent City near the 'Statue of Unity' in Gujarat's Narmada region, authorities said.
President Ram Nath Kovind will open the conference of India's top judicial officers in the presence of Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Justice of India Justice N V Ramana, Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court Justice Aravind Kumar, and other Gujarat High Court judges, according to Registrar General of Gujarat High Court R K Desai in a statement.
BJP Chief JP Nadda To Visit HP From April 9 To 12
Jagat Prakash Nadda, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, will visit Himachal Pradesh from April 9 to April 12.
According to the party's official announcement, he would undertake a roadshow in Shimla on April 9 and address a public meeting. During his visit, he will interact with party members and observe construction progress at Kothipura AIIMS.
This development is significant since Himachal Pradesh will host Assembly elections this year.
Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Atleast 35 people were killed and over 100 injured in a Russian rocket strike on a packed train station in eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, which was being used to evacuate civilians, Reuters reported.
Two rockets struck the station in the city of Kramatorsk that was packed with women, children and elderly evacuees, the report said.
"Two rockets hit Kramatorsk railway station. According to operational data, more than 30 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in the rocket attack on Kramatorsk railway station," a statement issued by Ukrainian Railways said. The head of Ukrainian Railways said at least two children were among the dead.
