Bangladeshi Cop Arrested For Harassing Woman Professor For Wearing Bindi: Report

"The constable's name is Nazmul Tareque," Biplob Kumar Sarkar, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Tejgaon Division, was reported as saying by the news outlet.

New Delhi: A day after a woman professor of a Bangladesh college alleged that she was harassed by a cop for wearing a bindi, the police constable involved in the incident was arrested on Monday.

According to Bdnew24.com, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said constable Nazmul Tarek was charged with harassing, insulting and physically assaulting Professor Lota Sumaddaer, a theatre and media studies lecturer at Tejgaon College in Dhaka.

"The constable's name is Nazmul Tareque," Biplob Kumar Sarkar, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Tejgaon Division, was reported as saying by the news outlet. "Our investigation found that he was involved in the incident," he added.

Dhaka Police Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said that administrative action will be taken against the constable, PTI reported.

The professor had previously lodged a complaint against the constable, saying she felt uncomfortable after the "man in the uniform" tried to run her over with his bike when she protested against his verbal abuses.

Lota Sumaddaer said she then saved herself by quickly moving aside, but sustained some injuries as she fell on the street.

Meanwhile, the event has triggered several protests around the country, with many organisations rallying and demanding that the police personnel be brought to justice.

While slamming the incident, lawmaker and renowned actor Suborna Mustafa said, "Where in the constitution of Bangladesh or in which law does it say that a woman cannot wear a teep?"

In her speech to the Parliament, Mustafa requested that the accused policeman be prosecuted to guarantee that such tragedies do not happen again.
