There are so many stories associated with the festival of Raksha Bandhan, here are some of the stories of the brother-sister duos that are often referred to this festival!

Raksha Bandhan 2022: The festival of Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is one of the most lively festivals celebrated in India. This day embraces the beauty of the relationship between a brother and sister. There are so many stories associated with the festival of Raksha Bandhan, here are some of the stories of the brother-sister duos that are often referred to this festival!

Yamuna And Yamraj: Yamraj, the Hindu god of death, and his sister Yamuna are symbols of the Bhai Dooj celebration. On Bhai Dooj, the story honouring the sibling bond is told. Each are supposedly the offspring of Surya (The Sun God), and according to folklore, after their mother abandoned them because she could no longer stand the heat of the sun, they both raised each other. When Yamraj surprised his sister one day by paying a visit, she gave him a tilak, made delectables, and took good care of him. As a result, the day is known as Bhai Dooj.

Queen Karnavati And Emperor Humayun: Bahadur Shah of Gujarat attacked the kingdom while Rani Karnavati of Chittor was in charge. The queen sought assistance from other realms. She sent a rakhi and asked Humayun, who was engaged in combat, to provide her safety. Humayun abandoned everything and travelled to Mewar after getting the letter. Unfortunately, he was too late, and the Rajput family lost. Rani Karnavati performed Johaur in accordance with tradition in order to preserve her honour. But as he had promised, Humayun later vanquished Bahadur Shah Zafar and gave Rani’s eldest son, Vikramjeet, the throne.

Roxana And Puru: Roxana implored Porus in a letter she sent him during the Hydaspes battle not to injure her husband, Alexander. When Porus on the battlefield noticed the rakhi, he decided not to kill him. Despite losing the conflict, he earned Alexander's esteem, who appointed him as the ruler of his realm and gave him greater territory to control.

Goddess Lakshmi And Demon King Bali: According to tradition, when the benign demon king Mahabali's kingdom was in danger, the god Vishnu, whom he worshipped, disguised himself as a doorman to protect his devoted disciple. But as time passed and he continued to hold this position, Lakshmi, Vishnu's wife, started to feel uneasy. She disguised herself as a Brahmin woman and went to the palace of the king. She brought a great deal of prosperity because she was the goddess of wealth. A little later, she travelled to Bali and wrapped a rakhi around his wrist. He was moved by her gesture and the "good luck" she had brought, so he volunteered to make a wish for her.

Then Lakshmi identified herself and explained why she was there. And Bali respectfully asked Lord Vishnu to go home.

Another remarkable story of Raksha Bandhan is during the partition Rabindranath Tagorestarted the Rakhi Mohotsav to fortify the ties between Bengal's Hindus and Muslims during Partition. He urged them to unite in opposition to the British and stand for one another. The people of West Bengal continue this custom by tying rakhi to their close friends and neighbours. It stands for adoration, esteem, and fraternity.

Previously, it was a notion that it is the duty of a brother to protect her sister against every evil, nowadays, it’s all about a promise to be there for each other, siblings observe this day as an occasion to extend gratitude towards each other for a wonderful childhood and being with each other in all the ups and downs of life.
