New Delhi: Kali puja, which is also known as Shyama Puja or Mahanisha Puja, is a significant festival observed across the eastern parts of the country in Kartik Month to worship Goddess Kali. According to the gregorian calendar, the Amavasya of Kartik month is celebrated as Kali Puja. This year, Kali Puja is on Thursday, November 4.
While the same day is celebrated as Diwali across the northern states, and goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on the day, Goddess Kali is worshipped in the states of West Bengal, Orissa, and Assam. It was introduced by Raja Krishnachandra in the 18th century and became popular afterward.
Requirements For Kali Puja
Lord Ganesh idol, Lord Vishnu idol, Goddess Kali idol, Earthen Lamp, Incense, Tantrik symbols, Rice, Darba grass, Sandalwood powder are some basic necessities of Kali Puja.
Worshipping The Goddess
On the Amavasya, goddess Kali is worshipped at night with mantras and rites. During the Puja, people offer flowers, sweets, fish, meat, fruits, rice, and lentils to the goddess. And the celebration goes on throughout the night.
On this auspicious occasion, people worship the goddess and seek protection against war, death, diseases, etc. They also pray for wealth, health, peace, and prosperity.
