New Delhi: The festival of lights known as Diwali is widely observed throughout the nation. This festival is infused with a wide variety of traditions and rituals. Goddess Lakshmi is the main deity worshipped throughout this festival. Known as the festival of lights, this festival is celebrated by lighting diyas and candles. Homes are also decorated with colourful Chinese lights and there is a Rangoli drawn to welcome Goddess Laxmi. According to Hindu belief, a total of 13 diyas are supposed to be lit during Diwali at different corners of our homes.

Significance Of Lighting Diyas During Diwali:

• Diyas are meant to protect against bad spirits and negative energies and symbolise kindness and purity.
• A diya's flame is continually burning upward with the goal of learning things that will lead us to greater ideals.
• A diya symbolises wisdom over ignorance and the triumph of virtue over evil. It disseminates goodness and optimism.
• Considering that they bring success and wealth into our life, diyas are lit in the front of homes.

Meaning and importance of each of the 13 diyas lit during Diwali:

• The first diya shields the family against untimely passing. 13 used or old clay diyas are to be lighted and kept facing south near trash outside the home on Dhanteras in the presence of all family members in order to keep off death.
• On the night of Diwali, a second diya must be lighted with ghee and put in front of your home's puja mandir or other location to bring luck.
• The third diya is meant to be lit in front of Lakshmi to request her blessings for riches, abundance, and success.
• The fourth diya, which is put in front of the tulsi plant, is intended to bring harmony and joy into the home.
• The fifth diya needs to be positioned in front of your home's front door. It represents bringing pleasure, joy, and love into your house.
• It is customary to set up the sixth diya, which should be lighted with mustard oil, beneath a peepal tree since it is seen as lucky. It denotes healing from health issues, and financial hardships, and is intended to bring fame and prosperity.
• In any temple close to your home, the seventh diya must be lit.
• The eighth diya needs to be lit close to the trash.
• The ninth diya is placed outside the bathroom to keep a pleasant energy flow going through the entire house.
• The tenth diya, which represents protection, should be lit at the roof coping.
• To spread happiness, the window is decorated with the eleventh diya.
• To commemorate the holiday mood, the twelfth diya is lit on the terrace or roof.
•  Finally, the thirteenth diya is to decorate your home's crossroads.

How lighting of diyas is useful for the environment and surroundings?

1. The monsoon season brings with it damp, microbe-filled air. The heat that the diya generates helps to purify the air.
2. Diyas are eco-friendly as they are made of clay. They don't leave any harmful remains.
3. Since the diya's light is not powered by electricity, it saves electricity,
4. Bacteria, viruses, and other airborne particles are destroyed by the heat from the light.
