CM Pinarayi Vijayan To Move Resolution Against Uniform Civil Code In Kerala Assembly Today

Kerala government is likely to urge the Centre to withdraw the implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Kerala government is set to move a resolution in the State Assembly against Centre's plan to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India on Tuesday. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is likely to move the resolution. In the resolution, PTI reported that Kerala government will urge Centre to withdraw the move.

According to ANI, “Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to move the resolution against  in the State Assembly today.“

The resolution came into picture after the campaign against UCC by both the ruling Left and opposition Congress-led UDF in Kerala. Several other religious organisations in the state also took to protest against the move.

Both fronts recently held separate seminars in Kozhikode against the UCC, with members from numerous religious organisations in attendance.

Earlier, Vijayan condemned the Centre for planning to implement Uniform Civil Code. He said that UCC was a plot to implement majoritarian agenda in the state by BJP. Vijayan also demanded the centre to withdraw the decision.

In a statement, Vijayan said, "Those who suspect that any current discussion is geared at eroding the nation's plurality by imposing the majority's domination cannot be faulted. This can only be interpreted as a conspiracy to impose their majoritarian ideology of 'one nation, one culture' by eradicating our country's cultural variety."

Rather than imposing UGC, he said that the focus should be on modernising and rectifying discriminatory practises in the country's personal laws.

Vijayan stated that the decision must be based on conversations with all parties involved and that the matter cannot be handled through a fast executive decision.
