Congress MP Moves Adjournment Motion In Lok Sabha To Discuss Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act

The adjournment motion of Manickam Tagore came just days after AP Congress chief YS Sharmila wrote to PM Narendra Modi to address the commitments outlined in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Friday gave an Adjournment Motion notice in Lok Sabha urging to discuss the implementation of Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014. Tagore also requested to discuss granting Special Category status to Andhra Pradesh. The adjournment motion of Manickam Tagore came just days after AP Congress chief YS Sharmila wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the commitments outlined in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014. 

According to ANI, "Congress MP Manickam Tagore gives an Adjournment Motion notice in Lok Sabha demanding a discussion on the implementation of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014 and the grant of Special Category Status to the state."

AP Reorganisation Act, 2014

The Indian Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, a consequential piece of legislation. This Act played a pivotal role in the partition of Andhra Pradesh into two distinct states: Telangana and the residual part of Andhra Pradesh. 

Introduced on December 5, 2013 for the first time during the winter session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the Act focuses on the restructuring of the state by establishing a new entity named Telangana, encompassing the 10 districts previously part of Andhra Pradesh.

YS Sharmila's Letter To PM Modi

On January 30, YS Sharmila wrote to PM Modi to address the commitments outlined in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 and strongly advocated for the inclusion of the matter in President's Speech during the Budget Sessions of Parliament. 

In the letter, YS Sharmila said: "The special status is a clear example. It was a promise made by none other than the then Prime Minister. But the successive government completely ignored the demand. The consequence is, today, AP lags behind any state of its size and potential, on any parameter of progress and development The special status could have ensured a level-playing field, improving the state's standards on various fronts, thereby turning it competitive. This was not to happen."

"There are several such promises, the most critical being the Polavaram Project, the lifeline for the state. The Centre and state governments together diluted the national status of the project, that otherwise stands as the right of the people of the state. The project's future is in question today and the governments are also heard to be making attempts to downsize it to cut the cost which will eventually kill its objective," she said.

Sharmila strongly appealed to reconsider the government's decision to privatize Vizag Steel Plant and highlighted the historical struggle and sacrifices made for its establishment. He urged the government to take concrete actions to fulfill promises and bring hope and progress to the people of Andhra Pradesh.
