Kerala Urges Centre's Intervention For Aid To Woman Who Couldn’t Meet Dying Husband Due To Air India Express Strike

Kerala Education Minister Sivankutty said Amrita had booked a seat to Oman on Air India Express flight on May 8, 2024 to see and bring back her husband but the flight was cancelled due to the strike.

The Kerala government has requested the intervention of the Central government to secure compensation for the family of a man who recently died in an Oman hospital without his wife by his side. The wife was unable to make it since the flight had been repeatedly canceled due to a strike by Air India Express crew.

In a letter to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kerala General Education Minister V. Sivankutty highlighted the "unfortunate incident" involving Amrita, the wife of Nambi Rajesh, who was in critical condition in the Oman hospital while she was attempting to travel to be with him.

He said Amrita, hailing from Karamana in Trivandrum, had booked a seat to Oman on an Air India Express flight on May 8, 2024, to see and bring back her husband. She reached the airport to commence her travel, but the flight was cancelled due to the flash strike of the Air India Express crew, he said.

"She requested the authorities for an alternate arrangement but all her efforts were futile. Unfortunately, her husband breathed his last on May 13 and Amrita couldn’t see him for the last time," he said in the letter, as per a report on PTI.

He explained that Amrita, from Karamana, had booked a seat on an Air India Express flight to Oman for May 8, 2024, intending to see and bring back her husband. However, upon arriving at the airport, she found that the flight had been canceled due to a sudden strike by the Air India Express crew.

Sivankutty said, "The callous and irresponsible actions of Air India Express have not only deprived Amrita of the chance to bid farewell to her husband but have also caused immeasurable anguish and suffering to her and her family. In this time of profound grief, they deserve compassion, empathy and humanitarian consideration."

Therefore, he requested the Centre's intervention to provide all possible assistance in the way of monetary compensation to redress the loss suffered by Amrita and her family.
