'Modi Surname' Case: Karnataka Congress Chief Detained After Party Launches Protest Against Verdict

The Congress has also planned mega protests along with the participation of like-minded parties against the verdict across the country in the coming days.

Karnataka police detained Congress state president DK Shivakumar and other party leaders for staging a protest against the verdict pronounced by Surat Court. The Surat Court convicted Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case for making a statement against 'Modi surname' case.

However, the Court granted bail to the Congress leader and his sentence was suspended for 30 days to allow him to appeal the Surat court verdict.

The Congress workers also held three separate protests in Chennai on Thursday. The Congress legislators blocked a road near Secretariat to condemn the verdict. After staging protests for some time, the workers dispersed to attend the Assembly proceedings.

The workers led by Congress leader AK Gopanna protested against the verdict in party’s HQ at Sathaymurthy Bhavan in Chennai.

The Congress has also planned mega protests along with the participation of like-minded parties against the verdict across the country in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi attended the meeting of Congress MPs at the Congress Parliamentary Office in Parliament on Friday, a day after the judgment. The meeting was also attended by party chief and LoP in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi also present.

After the meeting, MPs are likely to march to Vijay Chowk. The Congress has also reportedly sought time to meet President Droupadi Murmu regarding the verdict.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, as per IANS, said, "This is not just a legal issue, but political as well since the ruling party wants to intimidate the opposition leaders."
