Karnataka: New Multi-Storey Police Quarters In Bengaluru Develops Cracks & Tilts, 32 Families Evacuated

The multi-storeyed quarters cracked from the top floor to the basement and tilted the structure.

Chennai: After several incidents of building collapses reported in Karnataka, a seven-storey police quarters inaugurated three years ago developed cracks due to the incessant rains near Binny mills on Saturday. The crack developed from the top floor to the basement made officials evacuate 32 families from B block and later allot homes in different quarters at Nagarabhavi.

According to a report on The Hindu, a multi-storeyed police quarters near Binny Mills cracked forming a gap from top to basement and tilted the structure after heavy rains lashed the region on Saturday. The incident created panic among all the residents.

The police quarters constructed by Police Housing Corporation were inaugurated only in 2018. The construction of the homes began in 2016 and ended after two tears, said a senior police officer who reviewed the cracks on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the occupants reportedly came up with several reasons for the crack including that the crack formed since the construction was taken up on a lake bed and the crack was spotted immediately after the residents moved in but no action was taken place despite complaints. A nearby construction also led the crack to widen, the residents told The Hindu.

The Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant told The Indian Express that they have sought a report from Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation Limited and have recommended ways to rectify the building based on which further action will be taken. However, the contractor denied that the construction or the design was substandard.
