Bengaluru Airport's Terminal 2 Faces Leakage Woes Amid Heavy Rains, 17 Flights Diverted

One video, shared on the social media site 'X', showed rain infiltrating the ceilings of the terminal, known for its 'garden-like' ambiance.

While the rain provided relief to Bengaluru residents amidst the summer heat, Terminal 2 (T2) of Kempegowda International Airport experienced disruptions due to leakage, resulting in a partial standstill. As a consequence, approximately 17 flights were redirected to Chennai.

Following the incident, videos showing the inconvenience faced by passengers were circulated on social media platforms. One video, shared on the social media site 'X', showed rain infiltrating the ceilings of the terminal, known for its 'garden-like' ambiance.

In a statement, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates KIA said,"A very heavy downpour of rain within a short span of time on the evening of May 9, 2024, resulted in water leakage in certain areas of the terminals at Bengaluru airport,"

"Our teams promptly responded to the situation to mitigate the impact and restore normal operations. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers," it added, as per a report on Business Today.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds rendered the airport inaccessible for landing from 9:35 pm to 10:29 pm, resulting in the diversion of flights, stated a BIAL official to PTI. Thirteen domestic flights, three international passenger flights, and one international cargo flight were diverted to Chennai on Thursday.

The heavy rains, which commenced on Thursday night and persisted into Friday morning, are attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru, cautioning of very heavy rainfall in most areas over the next 24 hours.

Additionally, the stormy conditions led to the uprooting of numerous trees across different parts of the city, including Jayanagar, Nrupathunga Nagar, and RR Nagar, as reported by the agency.

Last month, Bengaluru recorded nill rainfall and the driest April in 41 years after 1983.
