West Bengal: 43 Australian turquoise parakeets worth Rs 14.62 lakh seized

West Bengal [India], August 27 (ANI): The Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday seized 43 Australian turquoise parakeets worth Rs 14.62 lakh near Ramnagar border outpost in West Bengal's Nadia district.

On August 27, specific information was received by the BSF regarding smuggling of exotic birds from Bangladesh to India near Ramnagar Border Outpost.

After receiving the information, the operation was planned and launched by troops of Border Outpost Ramnagar in border village Ramnagar.

Later, the party observed two suspicious persons coming to India from Bangladesh side carrying bags.

The party challenged them to stop, but they managed to escape the spot leaving behind three bags with 43 coloured birds.

The birds were identified as Australian Turquoise Parakeet, worth Rs 34000 each. Total cost of seizure amounts to Rs 14,62,000.

The birds are being handed over to Zoological Garden, Alipore, Kolkata.

An FIR has also been lodged in the same regard in Hanskhali Police station of Nadia.

P S R Anjaneyulu, Inspector General BSF South Bengal Frontier has issued operational guidelines to further strengthen Border domination so as to effectively check the menace of smuggling and other activities of Anti National Elements on South Bengal Border with Bangladesh. (ANI)
