SDMC proposes ban on display of 'non-veg' food in open

New Delhi [India], Dec 28 (ANI): The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has moved a proposal to ban the display of non-vegetarian food items in the open.

The private-proposal, which was introduced in the house on December 20, states that all the non-vegetarian food items should be kept on the shelves in such a way that it cannot be seen by onlookers from outside.

The proposal was passed in the house in the last meeting and was even approved by the Leader of House, Shikha Rai.

Rai said that the move was proposed to "maintain hygiene and to respect peoples' sentiments since not everyone eats non-vegetarian food".

The proposal is now sent to SDMC commissioner P K Goel's for his approval, who will examine whether the move is in accordance with the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act or not.

Once it will be approved by the SDMC commissioner, the said proposal would become a rule.

"A private resolution was put by a member regarding this. The resolution was passed in the House. Now, a policy and law are needed to be framed," SDMC Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat told ANI.

The proposal was first moved during a Health Committee meeting by Raj Dutt, a councillor from Kakrola village in the Najafgarh zone.

Dutt said that in a number of places the non-vegetarian items are displayed outside, which may get contaminated due to pollution, adding that there are many vegetarian people who feel uncomfortable with seeing these items.

South Delhi includes areas like Greater Kailash, Lajpat Nagar, Hauz Khas, Defence Colony and New Friends Colony.

The proposal is reported to come up for confirmation in the next session of the house on January 3. (ANI)
