He is a member of the Social Democratic Party, Olaf Scholz has been serving as the chancellor of Germany since December 8, 2021.

Germany, a leading member of G20, stands as a global economic powerhouse and key player in shaping international policies. Located in Central Europe, the federal parliamentary republic is the most populous country in the continent, with over 83 million inhabitants. Besides G20, Germany is also a member of the European Union, the G8, and NATO.

Germany is the world's fourth-largest economy, and is a major exporter of machinery, vehicles, chemicals, and other manufactured goods. A founding member of the G20, Germany is a leading voice on matters ranging from global economic stability, trade, and international cooperation.

Germany held the G20 Presidency in 2017 under the theme of  'Shaping an interconnected world' and accorded a special emphasis to addressing the global menace of terrorism.

The Hamburg Declaration adopted by the leaders at the 2017 summit endorsed the 'irreversibility' of the Paris Agreement. It highlighted energy security as the guiding principle for the transformation of energy system and called on multilateral development banks (MDBs) to promote universal access to affordable and clean energy. Germany assumed the Presidency of G20 on December 1, 2016.

The G20 summit in Hamburg sent a clear signal in favour of implementing the Paris Agreement, initiating a global energy transition as well as a new, sustainable growth model to modernise the G20’s economies and of supporting the transformation process in developing countries.

Ahead of the upcoming summit in New Delhi, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the forum had an important contribution to make and a 'big damn obligation' to fulfil particularly with the growing significance of BRICS. The chancellor also offered to help former colonies exploit and process their natural resources in what he called "fair partnerships."

The Group of Twenty (G20) is the premier forum for international economic cooperation. It plays an essential role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues.

Apart from Germany, the other G20 members are India, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US. The 20th member is the European Union.
