Ideas Of India Summit 2024: On the first day of 'Ideas Of India Summit 3.0', the third edition of ABP Network's flagship event, Prof. Vijender Singh Chauhan, Associate Professor, Zakir Husain Delhi College, University of Delhi and Neetu Singh, Founder, KD Campus & KD Live, Author and English Teacher discussed learning needs for young generation. Internet's favorite teachers also discussed the obsession over English language proficiency and the impending impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on jobs in the next 10 years.
'Language Reflects Social Class In Our Nation'
In the world of language and its nuances, two prominent figures, Neetu Singh and Vijender Singh, share contrasting perspectives that shed light on its essence and societal implications.
Neetu Singh believes that the essence of content transcends language barriers. She said, "Essence of content in every language is best understood without translation." For her, the depth and soul of a piece of content are best preserved in its original language.
Contrarily, Vijender Singh perceives language as a tool of social stratification. He said, "Language in our nation tells one to which class of the society the speaker belongs." According to him, language has been historically utilized as a means of social division, reflecting power dynamics and societal hierarchies.
Neetu Singh further stressed that knowledge of English shouldn't be seen as a marker of social class but rather as a means to access quality content. She argues, "Language in our nation tells one to which class of the society the speaker belongs," highlighting the social implications embedded within linguistic preferences.
When asked about advertisements claiming to 'learn English in 10 days' or 'learn English in 21 days,' Neetu Singh said, 'When I started in Mukherjee Nagar, I got a pamphlet claiming 'learn English in 45 days.' Then I said, 'Those who didn't learn English in 45 days, come and learn from me.' This is a learning process that takes time. However, with our experience, we can shorten the learning time. We give you a straight direction. English is easy, but we made it scary.'
Then I explained to a boy that you are not 'Hindi Bhasi', you are 'Hindi Bhashi'. So they do not understand the difference between 'Sa' and 'Sha' but they have an ego that 'Hum Jo hai So Hai'."
In a discussion on the state of employment in India, educator Neetu Singh talked about the crucial need for an increase in job opportunities. She stressed the importance of allowing young individuals to pursue their aspirations rather than imposing parental dreams upon them. "Parents should not impose their dreams on their children.... But yes, job opportunities need to increase in India. Today's youth is more aware, but need opportunities," said Neetu Singh.
Her sentiments were echoed by educator Vijender Singh, who highlighted the unfortunate reality faced by many young people. "Children are not parents' projects. We get kids who come from Kota, IIT, then IIM. We know that such children are 'projects' for their parents," affirmed Singh, underlining the pressure faced by youth to fulfill societal expectations.
Adding to the discourse, Vijender Singh raised concerns about the future of employment, particularly in light of advancing technology. He warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could render a significant portion of current jobs redundant within the next decade. "The diverse dreams of our nation's youths have ended... 70% of the youth is working jobs that won't be there in 10 years because of AI," expressed Singh, highlighting the urgency for adaptability and innovation in India's workforce.
