Opinion: Lack of Timely Diagnosis Leads to Severe Heart Ailments. Be Aware To Stay Safe

Timely diagnosis of heart disease is important for timely medical intervention and effective treatment plans. Early detection allows for preventive measures & monitoring patient progress.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world, with over 17.9 million deaths annually, according to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates. Lack of timely diagnosis and misdiagnosis are among the key factors responsible for the increasing mortality rate. Also, the symptoms can be easily misinterpreted, leading to delays in getting medical attention.

Complications Arising From Delayed Diagnosis

  • Cardiovascular diseases are often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to their complex symptoms. Untreated high blood pressure or severe heart palpitations can result in heart failure, and atherosclerosis can lead to a heart attack.
  • Delay in diagnosis can be fatal, or necessitate complicated medical procedures. Patients with advanced heart failure might require surgical treatments like heart transplants or implantable devices, which are riskier than conventional treatments.
  • Delays in diagnosis or medical intervention lead to increased treatment costs, and a high risk to the patient’s life. Complications may result in more intensive-care treatments.

Importance Of Early Diagnosis

Timely diagnosis of heart disease is important for timely medical intervention and effective treatment plans. Early detection through regular cardiac screenings allows for preventive measures, monitoring patient progress, and implementing tailored treatment plans as per individual requirements. For example, patients diagnosed with high cholesterol or high blood pressure may benefit from lifestyle modifications and suitable medicines that reduce one’s risk of developing severe heart conditions.

Some strategies can help ensure early diagnosis:

General Public & Patient Education and Awareness Campaigns: Doctors and medical health practitioners should conduct awareness campaigns for patients and the general public on symptoms and ways to mitigate health risks through lifestyle and diet changes. This will help people know what to do, and when to seek medical intervention and doctor’s help. Information should be spread through online mediums like social media, and even through offline campaigns.

Improved Screening Methods: With the advancement of technology, IoT (Internet of Things) devices, AI and blockchain technology, and advanced medical equipment are helping doctors and patients immensely in diagnosing and treating various heart-related issues. Patients in rural areas get timely medical intervention and assistance from specialised doctors and health practitioners through telehealth and telecardiology-based platforms. These platforms are accessible, affordable, and provide quality and accurate results.

Encouraging Regular Checkups: Doctors and medical practitioners should ask each patient to go for regular check-ups, to maintain overall well-being and monitor early symptoms and alarming signs in the body.
There are multiple consequences of delayed diagnoses for heart patients — it affects not only the individual patients but the entire health ecosystem. A timely diagnosis and immediate medical intervention from a health expert reduces the risk of severe heart diseases and associated complications.
