India Records More Than 1 Lakh Covid Cases, Highest Single Day Jump Ever

Coronavirus India Highlights: The Maharashtra cabinet on Sunday decided to impose a complete lockdown starting from 8 PM on Friday, which will remain in effect till 7 AM on Monday.

As the second wave of coronavirus has taken the country in its grip, India recorded the highest number of single day Covid-19 cases to breach 1-lakh mark on Sunday since the outbreak last year. In the wake of “alarming rate of growth” in infections and deaths, Maharasthra and other states have already imposed lockdown restrictions.

India reports 1,03,558 new  COVID19 cases, 52,847 discharges, and 478 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry

Eight states, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, have contributed majorly to the daily caseload.

The Maharashtra cabinet on Sunday decided to impose a complete lockdown starting from 8 PM on Friday, which will remain in effect till 7 AM on Monday. The state govt has imposed Section 144 of CrPC between 7 am & 8 pm, banning the gathering of more than five people at a place.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Sunday reviewed the situation and vaccination exercise in the country. PM also directed that central teams consisting of public health specialists and clinicians be sent to Maharashtra in view of its high caseload and deaths, and to Punjab and Chhattisgarh as well because of the disproportionate number of deaths there, according to the official statement said.

The 10 high burden states and UTs are contributing 91.4 percent of the total cases and 90.9 percent of the total deaths in the country.

Noting that the situation in Maharashtra, Punjab and Chhattisgarh is of serious concern, a presentation in the high-level meeting mentioned that the western state has contributed 57 percent of the total cases and 47 percent of deaths in the country in the last 14 days.

Mumbai reported 11,163 new cases & 25 deaths on Sunday.

Modi reiterated that the five-fold strategy of testing, tracing, treatment, COVID-appropriate behaviour and vaccination if implemented with utmost seriousness and commitment would be effective in curbing the pandemic’s spread, according to an official statement.
