According to Union Health Ministry data released on Friday, India recorded 228 new coronavirus infections, while the number of current cases fell to 2,503. (January 6). The total number of COVID-19 cases was roughly 4.46 crore (4,46,79,547).

The death toll now stands at 5,30,714, with four people killed. Kerala recorded two deaths in the last 24 hours, while Bihar and Uttarakhand reported one apiece, according to statistics updated at 8 a.m on Friday.

RT-PCR Test Mandatory For Passengers From 5 Listed Countries, Says Health Minister

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced on Saturday that an RT-PCR test for the identification of COVID-19 will be made mandatory for travellers travelling to India from China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand.

Any traveller from these nations who is confirmed to be sick or has tested positive for coronavirus would be quarantined, he added. "Through the 'Air Suvidha' site, passengers from China, Japan, Singapore, and Bangkok (Thailand) are being tracked," Mandaviya told reporters.

Passengers on flights from China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Bangkok are obliged to upload their RT-PCR report in advance due of the pandemic scenario.

Covid Fatalities In Australian Elderly Care Surpass 100 A Week

The number of Covid fatalities in Australia's residential elderly care has topped 100 per week once more, reaching levels not seen in months, the Guardian reported.

According to health department data released late Friday, 738 outbreaks are presently active in residential aged care institutions, down from 915 occurrences in the week ending December 23.

The current 738 outbreaks have resulted in 3,949 infections among residents and 1,661 cases among employees.

The total number of Covid-related fatalities recorded by aged care providers throughout the epidemic has now reached 4,612 people.

Japan Reports Another Record High Of 463 Covid Deaths In A Day

The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide in Japan reached a record high of 463 for a single day, health officials said on Saturday.

The country reported 238,654 new coronavirus cases, down 6,888 from Friday, reports Japan Today. Tokyo reported 19,630 new cases, down 1,090 from Friday. The number of infected people hospitalised with severe symptoms in Tokyo was 55, up two from Friday. Nationwide, the figure was 668, up nine.

Japan on Friday had reported 456 Covid-related deaths, as there was no stopping the coronavirus that has killed thousands in just a span of one month in the country.

There were concerns that the Covid infection and death numbers would only go up with the New Year festivities.

Maharashtra Reports 11 Covid-19 Cases, Zero Fatality, Active Cases Tally Stands At 137

Maharashtra on Saturday recorded 11 new coronavirus infections which took the tally of cases in the state to 81,36,791, the health department updates. The death toll remained unchanged at 1,48,418 with no new pandemic-related death reported.

The Pune administrative circle recorded six new COVID-19 cases, followed by three in the Mumbai circle and one each in Nashik and Nagpur circles. Latur, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, and Akola circles did not report any new COVID-19 cases.

The number of recovered COVID-19 patients rose to 79,88,236 with eight patients recovering since the previous evening.

Maharashtra has 137 active COVID-19 cases including the highest 69 in the Pune district followed by 29 in Mumbai and nine in the Thane district. Maharashtra's recovery rate is 98.17 percent and the case fatality rate is 1.82 percent.

Mumbai Logs 2 New Covid-19 Cases, Zero Fatality; Active Cases Tally Stands At 29

Mumbai on Saturday recorded two new cases of coronavirus that took the tally of infections to 11,55,153, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The toll remained unchanged at 19,746 and the count of recoveries stood at 11,35,378, an official said.

Mumbai had on Friday logged nine new cases. As per a bulletin issued by the civic body, the city is left with 29 active COVID-19 cases.

The average doubling rate of cases is at 2,27,441 days, while the recovery rate is 98.3 percent, it said.

As many as 2,289 swab samples were tested in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of tests conducted in the city to 1,86,51,367. The overall growth rate of cases between December 31 and January 6 was 0.0003 percent, the bulletin said.

China Releases Covid Detainees Ahead Of Scrapping Travel Restrictions

The Chinese government on Saturday ordered the release of people detained over a host of coronavirus-related incidents, a day ahead of Beijing’s plan to scrap its three-year-old stringently implemented zero-Covid policy.

China will end its international isolation from 12 AM on Sunday, fully opening its airports and ports for travel and trade, amid a massive coronavirus outbreak in the country.

International travelers can arrive in China without nucleic acid tests and quarantine restrictions once the restrictions are gone.
