South Korean Director Kim Ki-Duk Dies Of COVID-19 Complications At The Age Of 59

Kim Ki-Duk was the only South Korean director who won at all the three major European film festivals – Cannes, Venice and Berlin. Read on.

New Delhi: Kim Ki-duk was a popular South Korean director known for his idiosyncratic art-house cinematic works. Rendered as one of the most important contemporary directors of his time, Kim Ki-duk has received several international awards and recognition. He is also the only South Korean director to have won all the three major European film festivals – Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. Remo D’Souza Suffers Heart Attack: Geeta Kapoor, Terence Lewis And Others Wish The Director A ‘Speedy Recovery’ Kim Ki-duk passed away on December 11, 2020, which is nine days prior to his 60th birthday on December 20, 2020. Reportedly, the director travelled to Latvia on November 20, 2020, with the intention of buying a house there to stay permanently for a shooting of his new movie with a Latvian-Korean production. However, on the day of the purchase of the house on December 5, the director did not show up and was untraceable. After Kim Ki-duk passed away on Friday, at the age of 59 it was revealed that the director was recovering from COVID-19 after testing positive for the virus. The director made his debut in the year 1996 with the movie ‘Crocodile’. He, however, shunned making public appearances in Korea since 2017 after he was accused of sexual harassment on the sets of his film ‘Moebius’. He is also tagged as a misogynist by feminists in his home country as he allegedly represents misogyny in his films. The ‘Bad Guy’ director also faced the delay of the release of his 2000 film ‘The Isle’ as instances of animal cruelty were portrayed in the film reportedly. The British Board of Film Classification delayed the release of his film. Kim’s last directorial movie was ‘Dissolve’ which released in the year 2019.
