Not 'RRR' Or 'The Kashmir Files', Gujarati Film 'Chhello Show' Is India's Official Entry For Oscars

Gujarati coming-of-age drama "Chhello Show" is India's official entry for the 95th Academy Awards, the Film Federation of India (FFI) announced on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Amid the fans of 'The Kashmir Files'  and ‘RRR’ debating among themselves and picking their favourite out of the two films for India’s official entry for the 95th Academy Awards, another film has been chosen as India’s submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars.

Gujarati coming-of-age drama "Chhello Show" is India's official entry for the 95th Academy Awards, the Film Federation of India (FFI) announced on Tuesday.

Titled "Last Film Show" in English, the movie, directed by Pan Nalin, will release in theatres countrywide on October 14.

" 'Chhello Show' is India's official entry for Oscars 2023," FFI Secretary General Supran Sen told PTI.

The film is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur’s banner Roy Kapur Films, Jugaad Motion Pictures, Monsoon Films, Chhello Show LLP, and Marc Duale.

The movie, which features Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta, had its world premiere as the opening film at the Tribeca Film Festival in June last year.

The film is inspired by Nalin's own memories of falling in love with movies as a child in rural Gujarat.

It won multiple awards during its festival run, including the Golden Spike at the 66th Valladolid Film Festival in Spain where it also enjoyed commercial success during its theatrical run.

The Oscars buzz started in India after it was revealed that a jury of the Film Federation of India had begun looking at films which could be submitted from India for Oscars consideration. On Tuesday, film critic and trade analyst Ramesh Bala took to Twitter to share, "Since September 16th, Film Federation of India jury members are watching Indian movies for #Oscars Indian official entry.. An announcement is expected October 1st week or before.. #RRR , #TheKashmirFiles and #Shyamsingharoy are some of the movies under consideration.."

‘RRR’ was considered as one of the strongest contenders as the film had got global acclaim with many big league directors and film technicians rallying support for the film. Ram Charan and Jr. NTR starrer also won the Hollywood Critics Association Award as the Second Best Picture of the year. Recently, Variety.com had also mentioned the film as a possible contender at the Oscars and had also mentioned Jr. NTR in the list.

The Oscars 2023 nominations will be announced on January 24, 2023 while the ceremony will officially take place on March 12, 2023.
