'Thor: Love And Thunder' Trailer: Russell Crowe's Zeus, Guardians, Mighty Thor, Falligar And More
The trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder has a lot of hidden details, and Easter eggs. We decode several theories, and break down every detail, for you.
New Delhi: Marvel Studios released the much anticipated teaser trailer for the Chris Hemsworth-starrer Thor: Love and Thunder on Monday. The movie is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi, and is a part of Phase IV of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The trailer incorporates several colourful themes and gives the vibes of the 1980s. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor, the God of Thunder, was seen handing over the throne of New Asgard to Valkyrie, so that he could travel through the cosmos to discover the purpose of his life. He has joined the Guardians of the Galaxy in order to be a part of their adventures.
The trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder has a lot of hidden details, and Easter eggs. We decode several theories, and break down every detail, for you.
Sweet Child O' Mine By Guns N' Roses
The trailer opens with the guitar notes of Sweet Child O' Mine, a song by rock band Guns N' Roses. A montage is shown, and Thor says that his hands are now used for peace. The trailer also gives the vibes of the 1976 sports drama film Rocky.
The lyrics of the song Sweet Child O' Mine fit into the life events of Thor.
The initial lines of the song are:
"She's got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky".
The song may have been chosen for the trailer to highlight the fact that Thor reminisces his childhood days, when his loved ones were near him.
The next few lines of the song are:
"Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry".
Thor is probably sad because he lost his mother Frigga, his father Odin, and his brother Loki. Also, Asgard was completely destroyed, and most of his Avenger friends are dead.
The song also has the verse:
"Where do we go?
Where do we go now?
Where do we go?"
The use of the song in the trailer is to signify the fact that Thor's mind is wandering, and he no longer knows what to do in life.
Marvel Studios' Logo
The Marvel Studios' logo shown in the trailer is silver in colour, which is the colour of Gorr the God Butcher's skin.
Christian Bale will be playing the role of Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder. However, Marvel Studios did not show him in the teaser, which has left fans disappointed.
Thor Suffering From Existential Crisis
We see Thor meditating on a planet which appears to have more than two Suns and two Moons. Thor does not know where he belongs, and might be trying to communicate with Odin. Then, we see Thor opening his eyes, probably because he got a revelation.
Thor is seen exercising by pulling the chains attached to an imprisoned giant, probably to get back in shape. He is wearing a hat with the 'Avengers' logo on it. Above the logo, the word 'Strongest' is written. This is probably a nod to a joke from Thor: Ragnarok, where Thor calls himself the 'strongest Avenger'. It could be possible that Thor himself wrote the word 'strongest' on the hat to motivate himself.
The imprisoned giant shown in the trailer could be a god who was slain by Gorr, foreshadowing the latter's killing spree.
After that, Thor buries his weapon 'Stormbreaker' in the ground, the handle of which came from Groot's arm.
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Thor reveals his new look in a red sleeveless jacket. As per the toy leaks, Thor, in his new look, will be called Ravager Thor. This is a nod to Ravagers, the group Peter Quill originally belonged to.
Thor: Ragnarok had lifted several elements from the comics. The trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder also seems to have lifted American comic book artist Jack Kirby's designs. Several of the costumes Thor is seen wearing in the trailer appear to be inspired from Kirby's illustrations.
In the trailer, the Guardians are seen near primitive blue alien-like creatures holding spears. They may be characters called Interdites from the comics, and whom Lady Sif had mentioned in an episode of 'Agents of Shield'. All the Guardians, except Gamora, appear in the trailer.
The Guardians may be fighting against some enemies shooting lasers. Groot appears a little older, and Kraglin is also seen, using Yondu's fin and arrow.
However, Thor may have felt unwelcome by the Guardians, because of which he decides to walk away from them.
After this, the Guardians travel through hex points in the Benetar, and leave Thor at a place which appears to be Sakaar, an artificial trash planet created by the Grandmaster in the Tayo star system, and surrounded by numerous wormholes that deposit space waste.
Ship With Two Goats In Front
Then, we see a ship being pulled away from New Asgard, with two goats in the front.
The goats could be Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr, who pull the chariot of Thor in Norse mythology. Thor is travelling with Valkyrie and Korg across universes.
An interesting detail in the trailer is that 'Cocktails and Dreams' is written on the ship, which is a chain of bars shown in the 1988 film Cocktail starring Tom Cruise.
In the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, a pirate ship is also shown, with a dead Kraken in the background. Kraken is a sea monster of enormous size that appears off the coasts of Norway. The Kraken may have been killed by Gorr.
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor recruits Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane Foster, who has become the Mighty Thor, to stop Gorr from eliminating all gods, according to the official synopsis of the movie.
Gorr The God Butcher
The main comic on which 'Thor: Love and Thunder" is based was written by Jason Aaron. In the comic book issue, Thor was in Norway, partying with humans. The main villain of the storyline is Gorr, who was very religious as a child, and prayed to the gods to save his family. However, his wife and children died, and this made him seek vengeance.
Gorr acquired a powerful sword called All-Black the Necrosword or All-Black. It is a malevolent dark deity that has existed for billions of years, and is said to be the first symbiote made.
All-Black was wielded by an ancient malevolent deity called Knull.
Gorr uses the Necrosword to travel through the cosmos and butcher gods.
Olympus – Site Of The Throne Of Zeus
Thor is exploring galaxies, and is using the Stormbreaker to summon the Bifrost.
In the trailer, Olympus can be seen, which was regarded as the abode of the gods and the site of the throne of Zeus in Greek mythology.
Zeus is the god of the sky, and the chief Greek deity. In the comics, Zeus is a member of the Olympians, and was the god of the heavens, sky, and weather. He ruled a peaceful Olympus for centuries. In Thor: Love and Thunder, Zeus will be played by Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe.
In the trailer, a streak of light, which could be Thor's ship, is seen in Olympus. Four figures are seen entering Olympus, and they could be Thor, Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane.
The trailer shows lightning bolts inside Olympus, one of which is caught by Zeus. The climax of the movie is probably set in Olympus, where Gorr will be seen attacking Zeus and Thor.
New Asgard
Valkyrie is the ruler of New Asgard, with the Asgardians settling on the city of Tønsberg. This is the same place where Red Skull discovered the Tesseract in Captain America: The First Avenger.
One can see cruise ships in New Asgard, and a van with 'New Asgard Tours' written at the back. This means that New Asgard has now become a tourist spot. Some of the buildings are covered in gold, signifying that the Asgardians have started regaining their wealth and riches.
Valkyrie At An Energy Conference
We see Valkyrie at a conference on sustainable energy. She is wearing a suit, and appears bored. Miek is all grown-up and is seen in the background.
The energy conference may have been organised by the Roxxon Corporation, which is a massive petroleum industrial conglomerate in the Marvel Universe. In the comics, Roxxon has been involved in many activities normally questionable or illegal, including violent crimes, and is a consistent opponent of various superheroes.
Falligar The Behemoth
In one of the scenes, Thor and Korg are looking at the corpse of a god called Falligar the Behemoth, who is murdered by Gorr.
The scene is straight from the comics.
Falligar was the Patron god of the Galactic Frontier and an acquaintance of Thor. Falligar's corpse now lies rotting on the shores of his homeworld.
Thor may have gone to Falligar's homeworld to warn him about Gorr, but he was killed before his friend could come.
Jane Foster As Mighty Thor
Towards the end of the trailer, Jane Foster is seen wielding the Mjolnir, and becoming the Mighty Thor.
In the comics, Jane was diagnosed with cancer while Thor was fighting Gorr.
Thor offered to cure Jane through magic, but she denied it, saying that she is a human and wanted to be cured through the medication available on Earth.
Later on, Thor loses his worthiness and can no longer wield the Mjolnir.
However, the Mjolnir starts calling out to Jane, and Heimdall takes her to the Moon, where the weapon is located.
Jane wields the Mjolnir, gains Thor's powers, and becomes the Mighty Thor.
However, in Thor: Ragnarok, Hela destroyed the Mjolnir, breaking it into pieces.
According to the toy leaks, the Mjolnir has been pieced together. One of the reasons why Jane was able to lift the Mjolnir is that she was once infected with the Aether, or the Reality Stone, which could still be flowing through her veins.
In the trailer, Jane wields the Mjolnir somewhere on Earth, and Thor is surprised to see her. There are cars in the background, and a battle seems to be going on.
Thor and Jane are surrounded by monsters appearing like symbiotes, which have probably been sent to Earth by Gorr to wreak havoc.
Thor: Love and Thunder is slated to release in theatres worldwide on July 8, 2022.
