So Much Controversy Over Colour: Arijit Singh Addresses Gerua Song Row
Singer Arijit Singh addressed the uproar on reports that the police had refused to allow him to perform in Kolkata.
New Delhi: Deepika Padukone, a co-star of Shah Rukh Khan, attracted criticism when she appeared in the song 'Besharam Rang' wearing a gerua attire. However, when Shah Rukh Khan said the word in Dilwale, though, 'Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua' became a craze.
Singer Arijit Singh addressed the uproar on Saturday that followed reports that the police had refused to allow him to perform in Kolkata in February. The BJP claimed that this was because the singer had sung a line from the song "rang de tu mohe gerua" at the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) 2022.
Days later, it was revealed that authorities had refused to provide permission, forcing Arijit Singh's concert, which was slated for February 18, to be cancelled. This sparked a political brawl between the Trinamool Congress, the current government, and the BJP, the opposition (TMC). At the concert in Kolkata on February 18, Arijit Singh addressed the controversy for the first time.
At his concert last night in Kolkata, the artist played for almost four hours. He sung Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua as well. He commented on the dispute around the song.
“So much of controversy over a colour! Saffron is the colour of Sanyasis, of Swami Ji (vivekananda). Had he worn white, would there be a controversy over the white color as well?" he said.
For those who are unaware, 'Besharam Rang' from 'Pathaan', starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, received calls for a boycott. The choice of a saffron-colored costume in the song angered Madhya Pradesh minister Dr. Narottam Mishra. In the song, Deepika was seen sporting a saffron bikini.
He also claimed that certain of the sequences in Pathaan is offensive and threatened to have them banned in Madhya Pradesh if they are not changed. After that, several more politicians made similar remarks.
