Ponniyin Selvan 2 Box Office Collection Day 5: Mani Ratnam's Period Drama Enters 200 Crore Club

'Ponniyin Selvan 2' had a major drop at the box office on Tuesday, according to trade sources.

New Delhi: 'Ponniyin Selvan 2', the masterpiece of director Mani Ratnam, had a major drop at the box office on Tuesday, according to trade sources. The movie made almost Rs 230 crore at the end of its fifth day in theatres throughout the world.

According to trade expert Trinath, 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' had a substantial decline on Tuesday throughout all regions. “The film had a terrific opening and managed to breach the ₹200 crore club in just four days. However, the film did witness major drop at the box office in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday vis-à-vis Monday, which was a public holiday (Labour Day). After Tuesday, the global box office earnings are over ₹230 crore approximately,” Trinath said.

Trade reports state that the movie made more than Rs 10 crore on Tuesday, May 2, and that it has only taken in Rs 100 crore (nett) in India in just five days. Additionally, 'Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2' is thriving in the US market. In just five days, it has brought in more than $3.5 million (about Rs. 28 crore).

The film review on ABP Live reads: “The film has put itself in a separate league where the drama takes centre stage as opposed to flashy action sequences, despite the internet drawing parallels to the epic 'Baahubali'. The only time we see swords clashing and a gory battlefield is during the final moments, but the political drama keeps you glued every step of the way. 'Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2' is one of the rare sequels that not only lives up to, but much exceeds, the expectations spawned by the first part.”

The second chapter of the epic film by Mani Ratnam is titled 'Ponniyin Selvan 2'. The five-part novel series with the same title by Kalki Krishnamurthy was adapted for the screen.
