'Kaalakaandi' movie review : Terrific performances by an ensemble star-cast makes it worth a watch!

Film : Kaalakaandi Star Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Deepak Dobriyal,Vijay Raaz, Akshay Oberoi, Sobhita Dhulipala and Amyra Dastur, Direcor: Akshat Verma Duration: 1 hour, 52 minutes Ratings: 3 stars Starring Saif Ali Khan in a lead role, the movie's title is Marathi slang -- Kaala-Kaandi, which  means, something that is not being done in the right manner or is horribly wrong. And as the title suggests, right from the first frame, we are reminded that nothing can go right for its characters. The movie is one of the first releases of this year(2018) and is clashing at the box-office with Anurag Kashyap's 'Mukkabaaz' and horror flick '1921' starring Zareen Khan and Karan Kundra in a lead role. The dark comedy Kaalakaandi is directed by debutante Akshat Verma who was the script-writer for 'Delly Belly'. Set in the backdrop of Mumbai, with a variety of quirky, pseudo characters awake after midnight, it reflects the unpredictable life in the city. REVIEW: The movie revolves around  three parallel stories taking place on one rainy Mumbai night, interestingly none of the three stories are related to each other! The first one is about Rileen(Saif) a middle aged man who has never smoked or had alcohol in life but is sadly diagnosed with stomach cancer and has just a few months to live. The second track is that of a girl (Sobhita Dhulipala)who is involved in a hit-and-run case and the third track revolves around two small-time gangster duo Deepak Dobriyal and Vijay Raaz who gets involved in a murder. Obviously, the highlight of this film is Saif Ali Khan and it won't be wrong to call this flick as one of his career best movie. You can so connect to Saif's character as when he realises that he has a short time to live because he is terminally ill, he brings out his bucket-list. He pops a pill( acid drug) goes on a date with a cross dresser, gets dressed in a hilarious manner at his brother's wedding and what not. Seeing his track, one realises how we should just live each and every moment of our live and just let go the worries and sorrows. However I feel the real star of the movie is Deepak Dobriyal, the actor once again proves what a brilliant performer he is. Portraying the role of a small-time gangster in the movie, the actor effortlessly gets into the shoe of a Mumbai local. From 'Tanu Weds Manu' pappi ji to 'Kaalakaandi' no wonder the actor has come a long way. The film also boasts of an ensemble star cast other than Saif and Deepak Dobriyal, and has supporting actors who completely fits in their character like- Vijay Raaz , Akshay Oberoi and Kunal Roy Kapur. The girls in the film are all good and looks great on screen be it Isha Talwar, who plays Saif's love interest in the movie or Sobhita Dhulipala who plays a free-spirited woman. Actress Amyra Dastur who plays Akshay Oberoi fiancée looks cute and beautiful in the film. The background score especially the rain sound perfectly blends with the movie and makes the scene look more intense. However the movie fails to deliver a strong message and leaves the film open-ended for the audience to understand. While the plot unravels like the pages of a thriller, the humour seems laboured. Watch or not?  If you like  experimental and edgy cinema, give this one a try you won't be disappointed. WATCH trailer below:
