New Delhi: The historical drama 'Jeanne du Barry', which will have its global premiere on the opening night of the 76th Cannes Film Festival, will star Johnny Depp as Louis XV of France.
After a three-year absence due to his protracted legal dispute with his ex-wife Amber Heard, which culminated in a defamation trial Depp won in December, the film marks the 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' star Johnny Depp's return to acting.
The historical drama, Maiwenn's sixth film, centres on the turbulent connection between the French king and Jeanne du Barry (played by Maiwenn), the woman he invited into the Versailles Palace to live close to him despite the fact that she wasn't a noble.
Louis XV, who was nicknamed "the beloved", ultimately died as an unpopular king after being accused of corruption. He reigned for 59 years, the longest in the history of France after that of Louis XIV.
Depp, according to 'Variety', barely spoke French before the start of filming, so it will be interesting to see how he pulls it off without an accent.
Maiwenn was previously at Cannes in 2011 with "Polisse", which won the Jury Prize, and in 2015 with "My King", which earned Emmanuelle Bercot a best actress award. "Jeanne du Barry" is also expected to play in competition.
According to "Variety," the Cannes Film Festival will reveal its Official Selection on April 13. In the meanwhile, it has provided confirmation for two much awaited American films: Disney's 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny', which sees Harrison Ford return to the renowned franchise, and Martin Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon', which stars Leo DiCaprio.
The director of 'The Square' and 'Triangle of Sadness', Ruben Ostlund, who has won the Palme d'Or twice, will preside over the jury.
