'Unwell' Kangana Ranaut Given Last Exemption From Appearance In Javed Akhtar's Defamation Case, Court Warns Her With Arrest Warrant

Javed Akhtar Defamation Case: The court has adjourned the hearing to September 20 after Kangana Ranaut failed to appear.

Mumbai: The Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate court on Tuesday (September 14) granted Kangana Ranaut exemption from personal appearance in connection with a defamation case filed by Javed Akhtar against her. The court has adjourned the matter for hearing till September 20. Kangana's lawyer Rizwan Siddique told the court that the actress is unwell, requesting to grant her relief from making a personal appearance.

Siddique presented Kangana's medical certificate before the court, stating that her health suffered during the promotions of ‘Thalaivii’. He added that the actress has also developed symptoms of COVID-19.

The Magistrate court has directed the 'Manikarnika' actress to appear on September 20. It also warned Kangana with an arrest warrant if she fails to appear during the next hearing. On a related note, Javed Akhtar has recorded his statement with the court in the case. He was snapped by the media while making an exit from the court.

Last week, the Bombay High Court dismissed Kangana’s plea, seeking to squash the defamation proceedings initiated against her by Javed Akhtar. The court refused to grant relief to Ranaut and asked her to appear before the Andheri Magistrate Court on Tuesday (September 14).

Why Javed Akhtar Filed A Complaint Against Kangana?

The lyricist and poet had filed a defamation case against the ‘Queen’ actress in November 2020 before the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate, accusing Ranaut of making defamatory statements against him during an interview. He alleged that Kangana tried to ‘tarnish and malign’ his image in the eyes of the people.

The 76-year-old accused Ranaut of tarnishing his reputation when the 'Fashion' star talked about a 'coterie' in the Hindi film industry in the aftermath of Sushant Singh Rajput's demise.

The Magistrate had issued a bailable warrant against the National Award-winning actress, who appeared before the court and was granted bail in March 2021, according to IANS. She later moved the high court and challenged the proceedings that were initiated by the lower court, the report added.

Kangana Ranaut's Upcoming Films

Ranaut's new film 'Thalaivii' released on September 10, 2021. Although the movie has managed to earn rave reviews from the critics, it couldn't set the box office on fire.

Kangana has several exciting projects in her kitty including 'Tejas', 'Dhaakad' and 'Manikarnika Returns'.
