New Delhi: Alia Bhatt starrer 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' will have its world premiere at the 72nd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2022.  The much-awaited flick, which has been directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, will be screened at the prestigious film festival.


The biographical drama has been selected to be screened as part of Berlinale Special, a particular segment of the film festival which is dedicated to showcase exemplary cinema. The organisers have opted to screen those films that were shot during the pandemic.

Bollywood critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to social media to share the news with his fans. He tweeted, "'GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI' TO HAVE WORLD PREMIERE AT BERLIN FILM FEST... #SanjayLeelaBhansali's #GangubaiKathiawadi - starring #AliaBhatt and #AjayDevgn - to have its world premiere at 72nd Berlin International Film Festival."



Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has completed over 25 years in the industry, is elated to showcase his film at the film festival. He said that the story of his upcoming movie is close to his heart.


“The story of Gangubai Kathiawadi has been very close to my heart and me and my team have given it all to make this dream possible. We take pride and honour in showcasing our film at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival," the 'Padmaavat' director said in a statement.


Jayantilal Gada, who is the co-producer, said that the film will appeal to global audience. He said that he is proud to associate with Sanjay for the movie.


"I believe in Mr. Bhansali and his craft. It gives me great joy that our film will be presented at the Berlin International Film Festival and I am proud to associate with Mr.Bhansali. Alia has given a great performance and I am thankful to Ajay Devgn too for being a part of this project. It’s a story that will engage and appeal to global audiences," Gada said in a statement.


'Gangubai Kathiawadi' will hit the silver screens on February 18, 2022. The highly-anticipated flick is loosely based on S. Hussain Zaidi's Mafia Queens of Mumbai. While Alia is playing the titular role, Ajay Devgn will be seen in a special guest appearance.


The makers had unveiled the film's teaser in February 2021.
