Taking to his official X account, PM Narendra Modi paid tribute to tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, who passed away on Monday morning.
New Delhi: On Monday (December 16), Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late tabla master Zakir Hussain, praising him as a "genius" whose work transformed Indian classical music. The prime minister expressed his sadness at Hussain's death and recalled how the legendary musician had catapulted the tabla to international prominence via his mesmerising rhythm and talent.
"Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain Ji. He will be remembered as a true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music," Modi said in a tribute uploaded to X (previously Twitter).
He added, "He also brought the tabla to the global stage, captivating millions with his unparalleled rhythm. Through this, he seamlessly blended Indian classical traditions with global music, thus becoming an icon of cultural unity."

Acknowledging the deep loss suffered by millions of followers worldwide, the Prime Minister also offered his condolences to Hussain's family, friends, and the global music community. He wrote, "His iconic performances and soulful compositions will contribute to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the global music community."
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took to X (previously Twitter) to express his tribute. He wrote in Hindi, "The news of the demise of the great tabla player Ustad Zakir Hussain ji is extremely sad."

Zakir Hussain’s Death
Zakir Hussain, 73, died on Monday at a hospital in San Francisco from complications related to his long-term battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. His health deteriorated during the last two weeks in the hospital, and his family verified that he was transferred to the ICU.
He is survived by his wife, Antonia Minnecola and daughters Anisa and Isabella Qureshi.
