Rajkummar Rao Recalls Living In 'Pocket Size Rooms' In His Early Days In Mumbai, Says ‘They Were So Expensive’
Rajkummar Rao recently recalled his first few years in Mumbai, the city he first arrived sixteen years ago.
‘Mr. & Mrs. Mahi’, Rajkummar Rao's next sports drama, is now in the promotional stages. The Bollywood actor recently discussed his early days in Mumbai, when he landed in this city 16 years ago. He recalled living in an overpriced apartment with a group of friends.
In an interview with Curly Tales, Rajkummar Rao reflected on his early days in the city of dreams, Mumbai. He said, “It was a very expensive city. I come from a very humble background so I didn't I was not raised with money as such.”
Elaborating on his living conditions, Rajkummar said, “When I came here, I saw these apartments, these really small flats and they were so expensive. So, three of us - my batchmates, we shared. We started sharing an apartment like those modified 1 Bhk converted into 2 Bhk small, very pocket size rooms.”
Speaking about Mumbai city, the actor said, “But, I felt very safe here. It gives you a lot of freedom. There's a great energy in the city because people come here for aspirations. I love being here.”
Rajkummar Rao on His First Time Away From Home in Mumbai
Rajkummar shared how he felt homesick during his first time away from home at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. “I've always been a homebody. Even growing up, like the first time when I went to FTII in Pune I was homesick. For the first 3-4 weeks, I would call back home every day and that how much I am missing them,” he said.
He further added, “I grew up in a joint family but then after a month once you get into FTII and you start seeing the world, you're like we'll call you once in two weeks.”

Produced by Zee Studios and Dharma Productions, the romantic sports drama ‘Mr. & Mrs. Mahi’ is directed by Sharan Sharma. Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor are the lead actors in the movie.
The movie's premiere is scheduled for May 31, 2024.
